BOOK REVIEW: Dance of Shadows (Dance of Shadows, #1) by Yelena Black

  • Series: Dance of Shadows
  • Hardcover: 384 pages
  • Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Childrens; First Edition edition (February 12, 2013)
  • Language: English

Vanessa knew that dance was in her blood, but she had no idea the world of elite ballet was center stage for the darkest of secrets—until her sister mysteriously disappeared from the world-renowned New York Ballet Academy.

Three years later, Vanessa follows in Margaret's footsteps, lands the role most girls at NYBA would kill for . . . and gets trapped in a sinister spiral of secrets. Back-stabbing bunheads, a fiercely unrelenting choreographer, and the sexy male lead of the troupe—they all want something from Vanessa. And though she revels in the attention, what Vanessa truly craves are answers. Instead, she feels as though she is losing her footing at every turn. Is she doomed to relive her sister's strange fate?

Riveting and sexy, Dance of Shadows twists the cutthroat world of ballet with a psychological thriller, in a dance you won't be able to resist.

I have to admit that this book is in my top list of beautiful covers. It's eerily beautiful to see the lone ballerina in that pose surrounded by fog and red petals. Her tutu is stunning beyond compare. Although, it has bright colors, it brings dark foreboding. Plus, this cover speaks what the plot is all about.

DANCE OF SHADOWS is all about 15 year old, Vanessa Adler attending the prestigious ballet school, New York Ballet Academy. Although she is a natural-born ballerina, she's not really into dancing, she attended the school to investigate what happened to her missing sister, Margaret, who happened to be a ballerina in the said school, years before Vanessa. But Vanessa feels a strong pull to ballet because everytime she dances, she loses herself and the world fades into oblivion thus it's a given that she landed the lead role in Firebird. But then the girls started to get missing again. Soon, Vanessa isn't just the investigator, she has been entangled in the dark secrets of the school, secrets that are far from her reality.

This book had a very promising plot indeed. It was genius to combine something as elegant as ballet with mystery and supernatural. The notion that dancing=magic is really cool and that there is a right dancer for a dance, can transcend dimensions and is capable of unleashing forces is beyond awesome. Plus the author made the dance dark, intriguing and sinister. But sadly, the execution didn't live up to the reader's expectations. The first chapters were good, but as the book progresses; the pacing was so slow on unimportant parts and too fast on vital ones plus the characters frustrated me.

I found the main character Vanessa likeable enough but too frustrating. She may be selfless, good and friendly but she's naïve and stupidly stubborn. As for me, I really like strong characters, those that can stand up on their own or maybe just those who realize things at least. But who knows, there's still room for Vanessa's character to grow in the sequel.

As for the other characters, I wish we were given more of their backstories, and not just tell the reader who the character is. I guess one could never root for a character who's just a face.
The romance, although there were three love interests, it's pretty obvious that Vanessa likes Zep, or Zeppelin (weird name). It's insta-love actually and although there's a hint for a love-triangle, it doesn't really feel like it, when Justin --the guy who has the only common sense in school acts as a jealous jerk

Given those flaws, DANCE OF SHADOWS has some good points too. I love the mystery entwined with the reality aspect. The twists throughout the story (disregarding the said flaws) kept me on edge and to continue reading until the last page. The fast wrap-up in the story shed some light on the mysteries surrounding the school. It brought the darkness of the story to light and made me experience what Vanessa experiences.

I believe that given more practice, the author could definitely write her future books with more depth, style and passion. Plus she really has this good idea, good plot that could turn into a best-seller with proper care. I would still like to read of her future books and this series ( I do love ballet and wish this plot all its best)

Book Review: His Dark Ways by Naomi Canale

His Dark Ways

His Dark Ways by Naomi Canale
  • Paperback: 204 pages
  • Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (September 17, 2013)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1491261609
  • ISBN-13: 978-1491261606
Savanna Christy, a pastor’s daughter, is on a rebellion. Once her Dad told her the Bible warns of opening doors that shouldn’t be opened. She’s become obsessed with finding out if those doors are just as invisible as the God she’s been raised to know.

One night, during another thrill-seeking adventure, Savanna and her friends Amy and Lucky, head thirty minutes out of their small town of Tonopah, to check out the Goldfield Hotel, known to be one of the most highly active places for paranormal activity in the nation. Together the three of them break in, hoping to open one of the doors the Bible speaks of, and in the middle of a satanic séance the three of them are dragged to various places of the hotel. But when the door shuts before Savanna’s cornered, something saves her. As footsteps slowly make their way to where Savanna is under a window, she reaches out her hand. Daniel, an entity who’s been locked away between space and time, becomes just as visible as Savanna. And her energy can give him life again, only when they touch (which triggers an addiction).

HIS DARK WAYS is not at all what I expected!

From the book description and the cover, you would have thought it’s just another YA with bits of paranormal thrown into--- but it’s not just that---it’s totally different.

Canale's writing style is superb; as the story goes on, the words feels like my own despite the two POV’s. It’s vivid, well-written and very engaging—I could clearly picture the story.

The characters Daniel and Savanna has their own strong voices; each with stories to tell; I just hope, Amy and Lucky and the other characters were given enough backstories.

I wouldn’t talk about the plot, since I’d probabaly ruin it for you. All I can say is that, you should read the book until Savanna and her friends seek out the haunted hotel--- from that point, you might think you already figure the book out, but no, you’re in for the big twist! Most of this time, I caught myself saying, “OMG! ...OMG! ...Really!?... What?!” One second it’s romance, the next it’s gothic—it’s darker!

The pacing was fast and filled with tension from beginning til end and the story flows well but has kept me on edge, I was dragged to Savanna’s world and the messed she created—it was not a long book—but a lot has happened with the 188 pages---I guess you have to check it out for yourself!

It wouldn’t even matter if you’re a believer or not ( though it has Christian undertones); this isn’t even a romance story—it’s a story of a person who is smart enough to think out of the box but has lived all her life with blind faith until curiosity got the best of her--- as the saying goes, “curiosity killed the cat” ---will it kill her too?

HIS DARK WAYS- is a book that turns an ordinary story into something darker, creepier, more violent and thought-provoking—a paranormal thriller at it’s best. It touched my soul and my psyche, creeped me and then blessed me. It’s unpredictable, with lots of twists and turns and an ending that you never saw coming.

Naomi Canale is an author, we should all look out for! Very highly recommeded!
(Though I wouldn’t recommend this book to the faint-hearted)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Many have been known to call me Nomi, it’s always been my nickname. And if you ran into me as a kid, I’m pretty sure you would have taken off in the other direction because I probably would have been trying to chase you down wearing a snotty nose, messy hair, and arms opened wide for a hug, or a tackle (given the mood I was in at the time, it could have been either).
Not much has changed. And now that I’m older, I do find it sad when people quickly run out of Starbucks when they see me there writing, especially after they’ve found out that I write creepy stories.
When I was young, my parents let me watch/read all the scary things I could get my hands on. I loved Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, and Aliens—just to name a few. But when I grew up and had kids, I suddenly grew afraid of the dark and wrote happy stories with lots of sunshine and happy little leprechauns (I’m being totally serious). But now that my children are growing older, I’ve fallen back in love with the slimy creatures that enjoy living under my bed.

I also enjoy learning, and before I started writing I took Ray Bradbury’s advice…
“Learn how to master short stories first.”—my passion for books only grew from there.
For the past ten years, my love for writing and reading has more than tripled—along with my coffee addiction, and I’m very grateful for the family of writers who have loved me along the way.

EXCERPT

“What’s written all over my face now?”
Tristan gave Natalie
a loving smirk, his hands tugging on the waist of her jeans until she was pressed up against her. “Only love and devotion.” They held hands as they walked up her street and rounded her backyard toward her bedroom window.
Tristan leaned against the tree that guarded her bedroom window, at least that was the story they made up when they were kids. He pulled her close, resting his hands on her hips. “Maybe he’s just upset about something else, and it has nothing to do with your suspicions about Evelyn.”
“My illness?”
“Vampires we can kill. We can see them. This…” Tristan pulled her hair back and stared through her forehead like he could see what was plaguing her brain, “…we can’t fight it. Don’t even know what it is. I know how it makes me feel.”
Natalie bit her lip. “There’s not much I can say except right now, I feel okay.”
Tristan snorted. “For right now. But we don’t know how long that’s going to last. Or why it’s even happening.”
Her worry increased when he talked like that, and when she saw the fear on his face. “We can’t worry about every little thing. I know it’s hard, but right now, we’re together. I feel good.” She ran her hand up his arm. “You feel good too,” she whispered and blushed just a little.
Tristan’s face broke out into joy. “Wow, my little flirt! Someone giving you lessons?”
“I’ve been watching soap operas at the hospital,” Natalie beamed. “I think next, you’re supposed to kiss me.” Natalie bit her lip, nervousness bubbling inside as they shared a kiss. It lingered and her eyes closed. She clutched onto him, and in those moments, she felt like everything would be okay.
Tristan seemed to feel the same way from the way he nuzzled her neck, holding her close. Natalie leaned on him, and her body released the tension she didn’t realize she was holding. To get to be close to him, alone, even for a few minutes, was like reaching an oasis.
Tristan chuckled and gave her soft kisses. It made her feel hot, even against the gentle summer breeze.
“You know my favorite thing about this tree?” Natalie waited for him to shake his head. “It makes me think of you. All those times you used it to visit me at night, or I used it to sneak out to see you. Remember when we were kids and we’d use it to go to the carnival late at night?”
Tristan chuckled. “And we thought the circus clowns were possessed.”
Natalie beamed, her smile going from cheek to cheek. “It always made me think of you, but until a few months ago, I didn’t get why. Now I do.” She finally said it, and the nerves bubbled up in her. She swallowed them back, but still her face flushed.
Tristan’s eyes were loving and kind. He caressed her neck and a moment later, they were kissing. Sweet and simple turned hot and heavy. Natalie clutched his arms with her fingers, and her glasses steamed up from the heat of his breath. His hands searched over her legs and then across her butt.
Natalie pulled away, resting her head against his chest. She was overwhelmed, afraid of the intensity, but it didn’t change how she felt about him.
“You really are a sweet girl. How’d I ever get so lucky to meet you?”
Natalie shrugged. “It’s a small town.”
“It was rhetorical.”
She scowled. “Oh, well it still sounded like it had a question mark on the end.”
Tristan kissed her.
“I really should go in now, but it doesn’t mean I actually want to leave,” Natalie said. “I’ll see you tomorrow, somehow.” Thinking about all her mother’s rules made her stomach tight with nerves. “Besides, I can see your house from here.”
Tristan gazed over her shoulder through the yard and past several houses. “I’ll look out my window when I get to my room, if you’ll do the same.”
Natalie grinned. “Promise?” She bit her lip, feeling bashful.
“Oh yeah.” Tristan tightened his grip around her waist and kissed her nose. “You did good work out there tonight, Nat. I’m proud of you.”
She smiled wide, her heart filling with glee. “It was nothing. It was only a few this time. I could practically do that in my sleep!”
“That’s my tough girl.” Tristan kissed the side of her head. “Night, princess.”
Her heart skipped. She watched him walk away while waving, thinking she might never stop smiling. Once he was gone, her back gate closed, Natalie climbed up her tree. Back before the paladin knew she was a superhero, climbing trees was out of the question, but now Natalie found her hidden strength and easily pulled herself up. Her bedroom window was still open, with the lights off. As quietly as possible, she scooted her legs in first and pulled herself through.
Natalie held her breath as she spun and closed the window. As she did so, the bedroom lights came on. She gasped, turned around and saw her mother sitting on her perfectly made bed, tears in her eyes, while her father stood over by the door. This is it, Natalie thought. The things she did were going to destroy all the progress they’d made that night.

ARC Review + Chapter 1: Wake by Amanda Hocking

Wake by Amanda Hocking
  • Paperback
  • Publisher: Pan Macmillan
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1447205723
  • ISBN-13: 978-1447205722
Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They're the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone's attention—but it’s Gemma who’s attracted theirs. She’s the one they’ve chosen to be part of their group.

Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they’ve taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back. Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever. She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.

Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.

Hocking's brought to life her characters with their depth and unique personality. In WAKE, the characters develop as the story goes on. The descriptions were vivid and mysterious enough to keep me going. Some readers might find the pacing a bit slow, but it is the first book in a series, so I believe that Hocking is giving the details we will need as the series progresses. The conversation meanwhile, is genuine and humorous.

WAKE, although a mermaid folktale, is more a tale of sisterly bond, that no matter what, a sister is a sister, it's a bond that can't be broken by differences, tastes, or myth. Creepy, beautiful with a different take on mermaid lore, WAKE ends in a cliffhanger that will make everyone crave for Lullaby---the next book in the series.

Midnight Swim

The engine made a bizarre chugging sound, like a dying robot llama, followed by an innocuous click-click. Then silence. Gemma turned the key harder, hoping that would somehow breathe life into the old Chevy, but it wouldn't even chug anymore. The llama had died.
"You have got to be kidding me," Gemma said and cursed under her breath. She'd worked her butt off to pay for this car. Between the long hours she spent training at the pool and keeping up on her schoolwork, she had little time for a steady job. That had left her stuck babysitting the horrible Tennenmeyer boys. They put gum in her hair and poured bleach on her favorite sweater. But she'd toughed it out. Gemma had been determined to get a car when she turned sixteen, even if that meant dealing with the Tennenmeyers. Her older sister Harper had gotten their father's old car as a hand-me-down. Harper had offered to let Gemma drive it, but she declined. Mainly, Gemma needed her own car because neither Harper nor her father readily approved of her late-night swims at Anthemusa Bay. They didn't live far from the bay, but the distance wasn't what bothered her family. It was the late-night partÑand that was the thing that Gemma craved most.
Out there, under the stars, the water seemed like it went on forever. The bay met the sea, which in turn met the sky, and it all blended together like she was floating in an eternal loop. There was something magical about the bay at night, something that her family couldn't seem to understand.
Gemma tried the key one more time, but it only elicited the same empty clicking sound from her car. Sighing, she leaned forward and stared out at the moonlit sky through the cracked windshield. It was getting late, and even if she left on foot right now, she wouldn't get back from her swim until almost midnight.
That wouldn't be a huge problem, but her curfew was eleven. Starting off the summer being grounded on top of having a dead car was the last thing she wanted. Her swim would have to wait for another night.
She got out of the car. When she tried to slam the door shut in frustration, it only groaned, and a chunk of rust fell off the bottom.
"This is by far the worst three hundred dollars I ever spent," Gemma muttered.
"Car trouble?" Alex asked from behind her, startling her so much she nearly screamed. "Sorry. I didn't mean to scare you."
"No, it's okay." She waved it off and turned around to face him. "I didn't hear you come out."
Alex had lived next door to them for the past ten years, and there was nothing scary about him. As he got older, he'd tried to smooth out his unruly dark hair, but a lock near the front always stood up, a cowlick he could never tame. It made him look younger than eighteen, and when he smiled, he looked younger still.
There was something innocent about him, and that was probably why Harper had never thought of him as anything more than a friend. Even Gemma had dismissed him as uncrushworthy until recently. She'd seen the subtle changes in him, his youthfulness giving way to broad shoulders and strong arms.
It was that new thing, the new manliness he was beginning to grow into, that made her stomach flutter when Alex smiled at her. She still wasn't used to feeling that way around him, so she pushed it down and tried to ignore it.
"The stupid piece of junk won't run." Gemma gestured to the rusty compact and stepped over to where Alex stood on his lawn. "I've only had it for three months, and its dead already."
"I'm sorry to hear that," Alex said. "Do you need help?"
"You know something about cars?" Gemma raised an eyebrow. She had seen him spend plenty of time playing video games or with his nose stuck in a book, but she'd never once seen him under the hood of a car.
Alex smiled sheepishly and lowered his eyes. He had been blessed with tan skin, which made it easier for him to hide his embarrassment, but Gemma knew him well enough to understand that he blushed at almost anything.
"No," he admitted with a small laugh and motioned back to the driveway where his blue Mercury Cougar sat. "But I do have a car of my own."
He pulled his keys out of his pocket and swung them around his finger. For a moment he managed to look slick before the keys flew off his hand and hit him in the chin. Gemma stifled a laugh as he scrambled to pick them up.
"You okay?"
"Uh, yeah, I'm fine." He rubbed his chin and shrugged it off. "So, do you want a ride?"
"Are you sure? It's pretty late. I don't want to bother you."
"Nah, it's no bother." He stepped back toward his car, waiting for Gemma to follow. "Where are you headed?"
"Just to the bay."
"I should've known." He grinned. "Your nightly swim?"
"It's not nightly," Gemma said, though he wasn't too far off base.
"Come on." Alex walked over to the Cougar and opened his door. "Hop in."
"All right, if you insist."
Gemma didn't like imposing on people, but she didn't want to pass up a chance at swimming. A car ride alone with Alex wouldn't hurt, either. Usually she only got to spend time with him when he was hanging out with her sister.
"So what is it about these swims that you find so entrancing?" Alex asked after she'd gotten in the car.
"I don't think I'd ever describe them as entrancing." She buckled up her seat belt, then leaned back. "I don't know what it is exactly. There's just...nothing else like it."
"What do you mean?" Alex asked. He'd started the car, but stayed parked in the driveway, watching her as she tried to explain.
"During the day there are so many people at the bay, especially during the summer, but at night...it's just you and the water and the stars. And it's dark, so it all feels like one thing, and you're part of it all." She furrowed her brow, but her smile was wistful. "I guess it is kind of a entrancing," she admitted. She shook her head, clearing it of the thought. "I don't know. Maybe I'm just a freak who likes swimming at night."
That was when Gemma realized Alex was staring at her, and she glanced over at him. He had a strange expression on his face, almost like he was dumbfounded.
"What?" Gemma asked, beginning to feel embarrassed at the way he looked at her. She fidgeted with her hair, tucking it behind her ears, and shifted in her seat.
"Nothing. Sorry." Alex shook his head and put the car in drive. "You probably want to get out to the water."
"I'm not in a huge rush or anything," Gemma said, but that was sort of a lie. She wanted to get as much time in the water as she could before her curfew.
"Are you still training?" Alex asked. "Or did you stop for summer vacation?"
"Nope, I still train." She rolled down the car window, letting the salty air blow in. "I swim every day at the pool with the coach. He says my times are getting really good."
"At the pool you swim all day, and then you want to sneak out and swim all night?" Alex smirked. "How does that work?"
"It's different." She stuck her arm out the open window, holding it straight like the wing of a plane. "Swimming at the pool, it's all laps and time. It's work. Out in the bay, it's just floating and splashing around."
"But don't you ever get sick of being wet?" Alex asked.
"Nope." She shook her head. "That's like asking you, Don't you ever get sick of breathing air?"
"As a matter of fact, I do. Sometimes I think, Wouldn't it be grand if I didn't need to breathe?"
"Why?" Gemma laughed. "Why would that ever be grand?"
"I don't know." He looked self-conscious for a minute, his smile twisting nervously. "I guess I mostly thought it when I was in gym class and they'd make me run or something. I was always so out of breath."
Alex glanced over at her, as if checking to see if she thought he was a complete loser for that admission. But she only smiled at him in response.
"You should've spent more time swimming with me," Gemma said. "Then you wouldn't have been so out of shape."
"I know, but I'm a geek." He sighed. "At least I'm done with all that gym stuff now that I graduated."
"Soon you'll be so busy at college, you won't even remember the horrors of high school," Gemma said, her tone turning curiously despondent.
"Yeah, I guess." Alex furrowed his brow.
Gemma leaned closer to the window, hanging her arm down the side and resting her chin on her hand as she stared out at houses and trees passing by. In her and Alex's neighborhood, the houses were all cheap and run-down, but as soon as they passed Capri Lane, everything was clean and modern.
Since it was tourist season, all the buildings and trees were lit up brightly. Music from the bars and the sounds of people talking and laughing wafted in through the air.
"Are you excited to get away from all this?" Gemma asked with a wry smile and pointed to a drunken couple arguing on the boulevard.
"There is some stuff I'll be glad to get away from," he admitted, but when he looked over at her, his expression softened. "But there will definitely be some things that I miss.
"The beach was mostly deserted, other than a few teenagers having a bonfire, and Gemma directed Alex to drive a little farther. The soft sand gave way to more jagged rocks lining the shore, and the paved parking lots were replaced by a forest of bald cypress trees. He parked on a dirt road as close to the water as he could get.
This far away from the tourist attractions, there were no people or trails leading to the water. When Alex cut the lights on the Cougar, they were submerged in darkness. The only light came from the moon above them, and some light pollution cast off by the town.
"Is this really where you swim?" Alex asked.
"Yeah. It's the best place to do it." She shrugged and opened the door.
"But it's all rocky." Alex got out of the car and scanned the mossy stones that covered the ground. "It seems dangerous."
"That's the point." Gemma grinned. "Nobody else would swim here.
"As soon as she got out of the car, she slipped off her sundress, revealing the bathing suit she wore underneath. Her dark hair had been in a ponytail, but she pulled it down, shaking it loose. She kicked off her flip-flops and tossed them in the car, along with her dress.
Alex stood next to the car, shoving his hands deep in his pockets, and tried not to look at her. He knew she was wearing a bathing suit, one he'd seen her in a hundred times before. Gemma practically lived in swimwear. But alone with her like this, he felt acutely aware of how she looked in the bikini.
Of the two Fisher sisters, Gemma was definitely the prettier. She had a lithe swimmer's body, petite and slender, but curved in all the right places. Her skin was bronze from the sun, and her dark hair had golden highlights running through it from all the chlorine and sunlight. Her eyes were honey, not that he could really see the color in the dim light, but they sparkled when she smiled at him.
"Aren't you going swimming?" Gemma asked.
"Uh, no." He shook his head and deliberately stared off at the bay to avoid looking at her. "I'm good. I'll wait in the car until you're done."
"No, you drove me all the way down here. You can't just wait in the car. You have to come swimming with me."
"Nah, I think I'm okay." He scratched his arm and lowered his eyes. "You go have fun."
"Alex, come on." Gemma pretended to pout.
"I bet you've never even gone for a swim in the moonlight. And you're leaving for college at the end of the summer. You have to do this at least once, or you haven't really lived.""I don't have swim trunks," Alex said, but his resistance was already waning.
"Just wear your boxers."
He thought about protesting further, but Gemma had a point. She was always doing stuff like this, but he'd spent most of his high school career in his bedroom.
Besides, swimming would be better than waiting. And when he thought about it, it was much less creepy joining her swimming than watching her from the shore.
"Fine, but I better not cut my feet on any of the rocks," Alex said as he slipped off his shoes.
"I promise to keep you safe and sound." She crossed her hand over her heart to prove it.
"I'll hold you to that."
He pulled his shirt up over his head, and it was exactly as Gemma had imagined. His gangly frame had filled out with toned muscles that she didn't completely understand, since he was a self-professed geek.
When he started to undo his pants, Gemma turned away to be polite. Even though she would see him in his boxers in a few seconds, it felt strange watching him take off his jeans. As if it were dirty.
"So how do we get down to the water?" Alex asked.
"Very carefully."
She went first, stepping delicately onto the rocks, and he knew he wouldn't stand a chance of copying her grace. She moved like a ballerina, stepping on the balls of her feet from one smooth rock to the next until she reached the water.
"There are a few sharp stones when you step in the water," Gemma warned him.
"Thanks for the heads-up," he mumbled and moved with as much caution as he could. Following her path, which she'd made look so easy, proved to be rather treacherous, and he stumbled several times.
"Don't rush it! You'll be fine if you go slow."
"I'm trying."
To his own surprise, he managed to make it to the water without slicing open his foot. When he reached the water, Gemma smiled proudly at him as she waded out deeper into the bay.
"Aren't you scared?" Alex asked.
"Of what?" She'd gone far enough into the water to lean back and swim, kicking her legs out in front of her.
"I don't know. Sea monsters or something. The water is so dark. You can't see anything." Alex was now in a little over waist-deep, and truthfully, he didn't want to go any farther.
"There's no sea monsters." Gemma laughed and splashed water at him. To encourage him to have fun, she decided to challenge him. "I'll race you to the rock over there."
"What rock?"
"That one." She pointed to a giant gray spike of a rock that stuck out of the water a few yards from where they swam.
"You'll beat me to it," he said.
"I'll give you a head start," Gemma offered.
"How much?"
"Um...five seconds."
"Five seconds?" Alex seemed to weigh this. "I guess maybe I couldÑ" Instead of finishing his thought, he dove into the water, swimming fast.
"I'm already giving you a head start!" Gemma called after him, laughing. "You don't need to cheat!"
Alex swam as furiously as he could, but it wasn't long before Gemma was flying past him. She was unstoppable in the water, and he'd honestly never seen anything faster than her. In the past, he'd gone with Harper to swim meets at the school, and there had rarely been one that Gemma didn't win.
"I won!" Gemma declared when she reached the rock.
"As if there was ever any doubt." Alex swam up next to her and hung on to the rock to support himself. His breath was still short, and he wiped the salty water from his eyes. "That was hardly a fair fight."
"Sorry." She smiled. Gemma wasn't anywhere near as winded as Alex was, but she leaned onto the rock next to him.
"For some reason, I don't think you really mean that," Alex said in mock offense.
His hand slipped off the rock, and when he reached out to steady himself again, he accidentally put his hand over Gemma's. His first instinct was to pull it back in some kind of hasty embarrassment, but the second before he did, he changed his mind.
Alex let his hand linger over hers, both of them cool and wet. Her smile had changed, turning into something fonder, and for a moment neither of them said anything. They hung on to the rock like that for a moment longer, the only sound the water lapping around them.
Gemma would've been content to sit with Alex like that, but light exploded in the cove behind him, distracting her. The small cove was at the mouth of the bay, just before it met the ocean, about a quarter mile from where Gemma and Alex floated.
Alex followed her gaze. A moment later, laughter sounded over the water and he pulled his hand away from hers.
A fire flared inside the cove, the light flickering across the three dancing figures that fanned it. From this far away, it was difficult to get a clear view of what they were doing, but it was obvious who they were by the way they moved. Everyone in town knew of them, even if nobody really seemed to know them personally.
"It's those girls," Alex saidÑsoftly, as if the girls would overhear him from the cove.
The three girls were dancing with elegance and grace. Even their shadows, looming on the rock walls around them, seemed sensual in their movements.
"What are they doing out here?" Alex asked.
"I don't know." She shrugged, continuing to stare at them, unabashed. "They've been coming out here more and more. They seem to like hanging out in that cove."
"Huh," Alex said. She looked back at him and saw his brow furrowed in thought.
"I don't even know what they're doing in town."
"Me neither." He looked over his shoulder to watch them again. "Somebody told me they were Canadian movie stars."
"Maybe. But they don't have accents."
"You've heard them talk?" Alex asked, sounding impressed.
"Yeah, I've seen them at Pearl's Diner across from the library. They always order milk shakes."
"Didn't there used to be four of them?"
"Yeah, I think so." Gemma squinted, trying to be sure she was counting right. "Last time I saw them out here, there were four. But now there's only three."
"I wonder where the other one went."
Gemma and Alex were too far away to understand them clearly, but they were talking and laughing, their voices floating over the bay. One of the girls began singingÑher voice clear as crystal, and so sweet it almost hurt to hear. The melody pulled at Gemma's heart.
Alex's jaw dropped, and he gaped at them. He moved away from the rock, floating slowly toward them, but Gemma barely even noticed. Her focus was on the girls. Or, more accurately, on the one girl who wasn't singing.
Penn. Gemma was sure of it, just by the way Penn moved away from the two girls. Her long black hair hung down behind her, and the wind blew it back. She walked with startling grace and purpose, her eyes straight ahead.
From this distance in the dark, Penn shouldn't have noticed her, but Gemma could feel her eyes boring straight through her, sending chills down her spine.
"Alex," Gemma said in a voice that barely sounded like her own. "I think we should go."
"What?" Alex replied dazedly, and that was when Gemma realized how far he'd swum away from her.
"Alex, come on. I think we're bothering them. We should go."
"Go?" He turned back to her, sounding confused by the idea.
"Alex!" Gemma said, nearly shouting now, but at least that seemed to get through to him. "We need to get back. It's late."
"Oh, right." He shook his head, clearing it, and then swam back toward the shore.
When Gemma was convinced he was back to normal, she followed him.
Penn, Thea, Lexi, and Arista had been in town since the weather started warming up, and people assumed they were the first tourists of the season. But nobody really knew exactly who they were or what they were doing here.
All Gemma knew was that she hated it when they came out here. It disrupted her night swims. She didn't feel comfortable being in the water, not when they were out in the cove, dancing and singing and doing whatever it was they did.

ARC Review: Auracle by Gina Rosati

  • Reading level: Ages 12 and up
  • Hardcover: 304 pages
  • Publisher: Roaring Brook Press; 1 edition (August 7, 2012)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1596437103

Trapped outside her body, Anna sees and hears but cannot touch the one she longs to hold.

Anna has a secret: she can astrally project out of her body. But when there's an accident and her classmate Taylor gets into Anna's body, what was an exhilarating gift threatens to become a terrifying reality. Anna and her best friend Rei form a plan to set things right, but they don't anticipate the feelings that are beginning to grow between them.
Auracle by Gina Rosati is an exciting, sensual novel that explores the relationship between body and soul and the power of a single touch.

AURACLE surprised me a lot…Well, just reading from the blurb makes one think this is another YA book, with paranormal bits…only that this book had got a lot more twist. Kudos to Ms. Rosati for writing a story with no vampires, angels or werewolves..at least ghost and astral projections are not so common and bland subjects.>:D

And how about the cover? Blue does fine. The girl, the falls, the light, it’s simple but put in a mysterious and beautiful way that perfectly fits the story within.

The plot is about a girl with an unnatural ability to project herself or her soul, whatever that thing is, outside of her body. Everything goes well until she witnessed an accident and the next thing she knows, the infamous, smart, flirty and recently deceased Taylor has occupied her body. What more? She or the one who’s occupying her body is accusing one of her friends, Seth, of Taylor’s death. Now she and her bestfriend Rei must do everything to find a way to get her body, save Seth, and prevent Taylor from hurting everyone else.

I don’t know about you, but for me, this is quite unique, haven’t heard of a book with astral projection or the conflicts of this one. Also, Ms. Rosati’s writing can be categorized in show-don’t-tell type of books. It’s easy to jump in each of the character’s background story without being too boring. The character’s feelings are there. It almost seemed as if I was there with them, dying to know what would happen next and what would it take for Taylor to give Anna her body back. Anna’s narration is refreshing and kept me reading til the end.

What’s also fresh is to have characters who are not perfect but perfectly relates to imperfections of ordinary people. Not that Anna’s problematic family is ideal, but it give us the feeling that we might relate with her because she has problems too that she has to deal with and not focus on hormones and high school drama. Her dad’s alcoholic and her mom left them. Seth, her friend also suffers from temperament and broken family. Rei’s torn between her own dreams and what her mom wants. Taylor, although I kind of hate her, develops fully in the story, she still had that snarky attitude, but she knows now that affection doesn’t come from being famous and all the crazy teens do to get everyone’s attention. I see her changed from that bitchy attitude to someone who understands that she needs to ask forgiveness, not just for what she done but also for herself.

Although, at some later part when Anna’s just floating around and observing people, my excitement went low, maybe I was just too geared up for new adventures, so the story felt slow there until they had this Taylor-give-me-back-my-body thing, that it all starts to get real exciting. I also would have loved to see Anna’s first reaction when she projected, isn’t she scared that she could see her body, I mean from another view point? And what about he relationship with Rei, it seems to be cut short, uhg..maybe I just don’t want the story to end just yet.. I know a sequel’s far fetch, but who knows?!

I highly recommend AURACLE to anyone who loves paranormal but wants something new, with the heroine not in control with her body..:D..with lots of unexpected turns, humorous situations and with a bestfriend that’s swoon worthy for! I can’t wait to read mor of Ms. Rosati’s writing…Great read for everyone!!!

What do you think of Auracle? Have you ever get the chance to read it?

Book Review: Silent Song

Silent Song by Ron C. Nieto

  • Paperback: 290 pages
  • Publisher: CreateSpace (May 14, 2012)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 147518400X
  • ISBN-13: 978-1475184006

The princess of the school, Alice, is keeping a secret that could strip her of her high school fame. She is obsessed with the school’s outcast, Keith, but not just him – his music.

Since the inspiration for the song hit, Keith can’t get it out of his mind. The song must be played; it demands to be played. He knows the music is changing him, but he is unable to stop it.

Music has the ability to move you, enlighten you, and take you to places you have never dreamed of. And this particular piece? It has a life of its own and makes you forget who you really are.

As Keith and Alice learn of one another to the notes of that one perfect tune, they can overlook their roles and discover who they could be together. But they also discover someone else is listening and intends on keeping Keith to herself, possibly for an eternity.

Ok, so I participated in the Silent Song tour a week ago, but it isn’t for review but for a “6 Words Post”. But luckily, the author was so generous of giving me a copy, so I can share this wonderful story with you.>:)

First off, the cover isn’t really that pretty, but it catches any reader’s attention with the rose’s petals and the guitar. It does really speak of the content.

I read the summary, but it didn’t prepare me of what’s inside. I hadn’t even expected this to be a little bit, or more paranormal. I know, I must be really stupid to not read between the lines of the summary..lol..

Anyways, when the book arrived I hadn’t really planned of reading it right away, but since I was curious, I decided to read the first chapter. And then, the next thing I know, I finish the book in one sitting! That’s how good and capturing it was!!!

I can’t believe this is the author’s first book. Ron Nieto’s writing was spectacular. I love how she described music through Alice’s perspective of Keith’s music. As a lover of music myself, it’s really amazing to read a book that really captures the essence of music and make it come alive. I could actually sometimes feel what Alice feel of his music..:D

Also, the story’s in a perfect timing, at first, we got to know Alice and her secret, her and Keith’s past connection, got to know the real Keith, saw their fear, doubt of having each other, then they’re falling in love, then there’s the big twist. All of a sudden, from YA contemporary, we’re onto YA paranormal, with bits of Historical, and it’s such a nice transition.

Plus, I love all of the characters, yes even Beatrice,,..:D Alice- even if she’s one of the popular girls, she does have a heart and really stands up for her principles. Keith- at first I was disappointed of the thought that he’s Alice’s love interest. But after a few scenes, his music, his story, he simply carves out a place in my heart. I believe that he has the center stage here. And what’s even cool, I don’t care if he’s gothic and vulnerable and not the typical, hero-type-hot guy, what matters is he’s such a sweet, haunting and caring guy. Although, I did love those times, when he seemed to act like the bad boy **not so spoiler** like when Lena saw them at the gymn, the swagger, the way he said it, and the words, I really think it’s cool. **end of not so spoiler**

I fell in love with Alice and Keith. The mystery behind the song, Alice’s attraction to Keith’s music, the high school drama, the play. Everything. There might be some typos but it’s not enough to distract me from reading. There’s a lot to say, and yet I know no one would bother to read this if I continued blubbering..lol…

SO, what I would just like to say is, this book is::::

Very highly recommended, one of the best books I’ve read this year. Perfect for music, YA, even historical and supernatural lovers. If you want a high school love story that’s unique in every way, then grab Ron Nieto’s Silent Song now..:)

Book Review+ Chapter 1: Forgiven by Jana Oliver

Forgiven by Jana Oliver
  • Reading level: Ages 12 and up
  • Paperback: 368 pages
  • Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin; Original edition (March 27, 2012)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0312614802
  • ISBN-13: 978-0312614805
Jana Oliver's third spellbinding Demon Trappers novel - following The Demon Trapper's Daughter and Soul Thief - brings all new thrills, as Riley Blackthorne takes on demons, love... and the future of the human race.

The days are growing darker for 17-year-old demon trapper Riley Blackthorne. With her father’s reanimated body back safely, Beck barely speaking to her because of a certain hunky Fallen angel, and a freshly-made deal with Lucifer, she has enough on her hands to last a normal teenage lifetime. Though she bargained with Heaven to save his life, her ex-boyfriend Simon has told the Vatican’s Demon Hunters that she’s working with Hell. So now she’s in hiding, at the top of everyone’s most-wanted list.

But it’s becoming clear that this is bigger than Riley, and rapidly getting out of control:  something sinister is happening in Atlanta… or someone. The demons are working together for the first time ever and refusing to die, putting civilians in harm’s way. Riley thinks she might know who’s behind it all, but who’s going to believe her? Caught between her bargain with Heaven and her promise to Lucifer, Riley fears the final war is coming – and it may be closer than anyone thinks…

Okay, so first I’d like you to know that this was the first book I read from the author---the first book I read from the series. So I don’t have anything to compare to especially with the previous books in the series. Though personally, I asked to review this book is because the many positive reviews I heard from the first two- The Demon Trapper’s Daughter and Soul Thief.

Surprisingly enough, even with the vast new and old characters- the demons, the trappers, fallen, summoners, I wasn’t entirely lost. Once I tuned in with Riley, everything comes vivid in her POV. I understand the situation she’s in, the relationships and misunderstandings she had with the other characters and even her choice to uncover the mysteries and protect humanity. The storyline was easy to follow but the twists and turns are not easily figured out.

I loved Jana Oliver’s writing style, its fresh and unique. The readers were always up for action and at the same time, subplots were given emphasis and the tension between the protagonists, the mysteries, the conflicts were all there. She wrote the book with passion and deep detail that it’s easy to imagine the world she made, the demons, and the action-packed scenarios happening.

I also loved Riley, she’s a strong character that doesn’t depend on her leading man or anyone, she actually thinks about resolutions and the things to do in order to make things right especially the consequences of her past actions. Her behavior was measured and it’s less on drama, she was too mature for a seventeen-year-old, which isn’t bad.

Beck…at first, I thought Beck’s a girl..:D. He was hot, gorgeous, yes, but it was really unfair of him to get really mad with Riley, just because she made the mistake of sleeping with another man, which, take note, Beck had been with many girls before. I would have loved to see more of them- Beck and Riley that is.

Meanwhile Justine, I hate her. Though I know, she played an important role in the story. Just don’t want to talk about her. By the way, another queer about this book, is that the feminine names are mostly used by boys and the masculine ones, Riley, Justine are for girls.

The ending? I would have like to see the epic battle to be really epic. I was expecting far something greater and yet the resolution was too perfect for me. With all the non-stop action, the ending seemed a little too easy maybe. Meanwhile Riley’s dad is a character I would never forget, her love for Riley that even in death, he would still do everything to keep her safe.

I laughed, I cried, got annoyed, mad, I felt everything while reading this book. I can’t wait to read the last book in the series and see how the story would end and especially to have more of Riley and Beck.

Forgiven is an action-packed, enthralling and riveting tale of Demon Trappers and the world in chaos of the near Armageddon set in the future but not too futuristic. With heart-pounding, jaw-dropping scenarios, Forgiven would leave you wanting for more. Highly Recommended!..:)

ONE

2018
Atlanta, Georgia

Riley Blackthorne’s tears were no more. She’d cried herself dry, yet she still lingered in the arms of a dead man. If given the chance, she would remain in her father’s arms for the rest of her life.
When she looked up, sad brown eyes gazed back. Master Trapper Paul Blackthorne was a reanimated corpse now, summoned from his grave by none other than the Prince of Hell. Like the day he’d been buried, he wore his best suit and favorite red tie, the one she’d given him as a Christmas present.
On the run from the Vatican’s team of Demon Hunters, Riley had taken refuge in the home of Mortimer Alexander, a summoner of the dead. She had not expected to find her father waiting for her. Now, as they huddled together, she laid her head on his chest, seeking solace in his embrace.
“I’ve missed you,” she whispered.
“I’ve missed you too, Pumpkin.”
This isn’t right. We’re just borrowing time.
Her dad should be in his grave. Then he would never know that Riley wasn’t his innocent little girl any longer, that she’d given up her virginity the night before.
I was a fool. Why did I let Ori do that?
She’d spent that night in the arms of someone who had said he would protect her. Who had claimed she was special and that he cherished her because she reminded him of Heaven. Morning brought the bitter truth—Ori’s protection came with a big price tag. Her lover, the Fallen angel, would watch over her only if she consigned her soul to Hell. Then Lucifer, the Prince, had arrived and turned Ori into a statue for failing to follow his orders.
Riley wiped a bead of sweat off her forehead. Her body felt like a war zone, some unknown fire burning inside her now.
What if I’m pregnant? She shuddered at the thought. Ori had said that wasn’t possible but that could have been a clever lie. Is that why the Demon Hunters wanted her? What would the child of a Fallen and a mortal be like? Normal? Evil? Somewhere in between?
What would the Church do to me and the baby?
When she shivered, her father broke the embrace.
“Come with me,” he said, taking her hand and slowly rising to his feet. “I need to feel the sunlight again.” He stopped in the kitchen and poured her a tall glass of apple juice, then they entered a walled garden, where cardinals and raucous blue jays flitted around a well-stocked bird feeder. Water cascaded from the fingers of a nude stone nymph perched in the center of a broad fountain. They settled on a stone bench still covered with frost, and Riley’s behind immediately reacted to the cold. Her father didn’t seem to notice it.
He handed her the juice. “Drink. You look awful.”
It wasn’t a good sign when a dead guy said you looked bad.
Riley took a long sip. It was cold and it tasted good. Clutching the glass in her hands, she gave in to the questions that careened around inside her.
“What’s it like to be … dead?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Very peculiar.”
“You can’t tell me, can you?”
“No. Not like I thought,” he murmured.
The next question was harder. “Did you see Mom?”
He shook his head as his eyes clouded with sadness. “No.”
Riley’s heart fractured into smaller pieces. “Lucifer told me what you did. How you gave up your soul for me.”
Her dad’s eyes widened. “You spoke with the Prince?”
“He was in the graveyard this morning after…” Riley paused, biting down on her lip. No, can’t go there. Maybe someday she’d have the courage to admit what she’d done, but not now. “Lucifer said you pledged your soul to him so that Archfiend wouldn’t kill you. So you could take care of me.”
Her dad issued a resigned nod. “Your mother understood why I did it.”
“Mom knew?” she blurted. “Why didn’t you guys tell me?”
“You were too young.”
“That’s crap, and you know it,” she retorted. “I was old enough. What else haven’t you told me, Dad? What else is going to fall on my head when I’m not looking?”
He didn’t reply, his eyes not meeting hers. Which meant there was more.
It was so unfair. Her father was supposed to remain alive until she had become a master trapper.
“Lucifer didn’t keep his bargain,” she complained. “Your soul should be yours.”
“He said he wouldn’t release it, that I owed him a debt, but he wouldn’t say what.”
“So you’re stuck in Hell until he decides you’re not?”
Her father winced. “Don’t be angry. I did what was best. My soul isn’t important.”
He’s wrong. It was so important that Lucifer wasn’t willing to give it up even when her dad had died before his time.
“Does Mort know who summoned you?” There was a faint nod. “And he’s okay with that?” she asked, surprised.
“He was shocked, but he hasn’t thrown me to the wolves yet.”
“What about Beck?”
Her father shook his head. “I don’t look forward to the day he learns the truth. It’s going to tear him apart.”
Denver Beck, her dad’s trapping partner, had considered Paul Blackthorne a mentor. To learn he was aligned with Hell would be as devastating as when Beck had found out she’d slept with a Fallen.
Her father touched her arm. “I’ll see if our host has someplace for you to sleep. You need rest.”
Riley blinked to hold back the tears. “In a little bit,” she said, not wanting to be separated from him. Closing her eyes, she leaned against him, inhaling the confusing scents of oranges and cedar chips that seemed to be her father now. Desperate to find some good in all this disaster, she took his hand and squeezed it, remembering what it had been like before he died. When his hands were warm and his heart beating. When there had been all the time in the world.
*   *   *
The spare bedroom in Mort’s house was bright, decorated with cream walls and peach accents. It looked like a girl’s room, which made Riley wonder if he had a sister or a niece. She yawned, then pulled the curtains closed to reduce the light. As she pulled off her shirt, her long brown hair fell over her face. With it came the unmistakable scent of crisp night air. Ori’s scent.
“Damn you,” she swore, flinging her clothes in all directions, as if that might reverse the dark echoes of the angel’s touch. She fled into the shower stall, adjusting the temperature as cold as she could stand to combat the inferno inside her veins. As the water cascaded, she scrubbed her skin until it turned red. The memories refused to be washed away.
When Riley finally climbed into the bed, she curled into a fetal position, sleep tugging at her. She wasn’t the first to give up her virginity to a guy who said he’d always care for her. Riley had heard other girls admit the same mistake during whispered confessions in school restrooms. From this point on, she would always divide her life into Before and After the Angel. Statue or not, Ori would be inside her heart, affecting every chance at love for the rest of her days.
Just like Beck.
*   *   *
To Denver Beck, there were many ways to welcome a new day—spread-eagled on his own lawn, wrists secured by flex-cuffs wasn’t the best of them.
“What the hell is goin’ on?” he bellowed into the dirt.
The response was the sound of combat boots tromping around inside his house as their owners’ voices called out to each other in Italian. When there was a sharp shatter of glass, he swore. Beck closed his eyes to keep the dirt out of them and forced himself to relax. If he fought back, the Demon Hunter behind him might feel the need to make this his last day on earth.
I’ll be damned if I die like this.
His only choice was to remain here until the Vatican’s elite team finished its search. Which, from all the commotion, involved tearing his house apart.
When he heard a name in the midst of the voices flowing around him, he sighed into the dirt. They were searching for Riley Blackthorne, the seventeen-year-old daughter of Beck’s dead trapper buddy, Paul.
The day had sucked even before the paramilitary-style raid, one Beck was sure his neighbors were enjoying with their morning coffee. Right after dawn, Riley had arrived on his doorstep, weeping and shell-shocked. Through tears and sobs, she’d admitted her blackest sin: She’d spent the night with one of Lucifer’s own.
Beck had known this Ori guy was bad news from the first moment he’d seen him with Riley, but he’d never expected the bastard to be a Fallen angel.
Why him? Even now, he could see her huddled on the couch, weeping, as he’d shouted that very question at her. After all Beck had done for her, she’d taken up with that thing.
When he’d spat insults at Paul’s daughter, she’d responded in kind. Fearing how bad it might get between them, Beck had bolted from the house. When he’d returned a short time later he’d found his front door wide open and the Vatican’s team on the prowl.
More rapid-fire conversation bounced around him: Beck didn’t need to speak the language to hear the frustration. Since Riley wasn’t lying in the dirt beside him, the raid made the hunters look bad. They would need a scapegoat, and Beck would do just fine. A new voice cut in—one he recognized—it was the hunters’ captain. Apparently he’d finally decided to join the party.
Without warning, Beck was hauled roughly to his knees. Once he was up, he tried to wipe his mouth on a shoulder; it proved impossible with the flex-cuffs in place. The Demon Hunter with the rifle circled around to the side, the weapon pointed at Beck’s chest.
The captain of the unit squatted in front of him, his dark eyes flinty. Elias Salvatore was thirty-two, a decade older than Beck. He had a Mediterranean complexion, black hair, and a goatee, coupled with an athletic build. His navy turtleneck sported epaulettes and the Demon Hunters’ emblem—St. George slaying the dragon. Crisply pleated trousers were tucked neatly into polished combat boots.
“Mr. Beck,” he said evenly.
“Captain Salvatore. What the hell is goin’ on?”
“We were informed that Riley Blackthorne was here.”
Who told ya that?
“She was here a while ago. Must have left.”
The man’s eyes narrowed farther. “Where is she?”
“No idea.” It was a safe bet one of the neighbors had heard them shouting at each other, so he went with the truth in case the hunters bothered to check. “We had words.”
“About what?”
“That’s none of yer business,” Beck said. A second later, he was facedown in the dirt, a heavy boot pressing on his back.
The captain issued a crisp command and Beck was hauled up again. He gave a look over his shoulder and found that the boot belonged to Lieutenant Amundson, the captain’s second-in-command. He was a tall man, Nordic, and not known for his manners.
Beck spat dirt. “Get these damned cuffs off me.”
Salvatore gave a gesture. There was the snick of a knife, a stinging pain, then the cuffs fell away. Amundson had made sure to cut Beck’s palm in the process.
Beck wiped his hands on his jeans, then inspected the wound.
The captain delivered a penetrating look over the prisoner’s shoulder. He gestured for the lieutenant to move away. “I apologize.”
Beck clamped down on his fury. Throwing punches wouldn’t be a smart move at the moment.
Did the hunters know about Riley and the Fallen? They have to. Why else would they be lookin’ for her? Still, he didn’t dare make assumptions.
“What’s this all about?” Beck asked.
The captain rose. “Let’s go inside.”
Beck stood, dusted off his jeans, and retrieved his trapping bag from where it lay near the driveway. He felt the bottom of the canvas and was relieved to find it wasn’t wet, which meant none of the glass spheres inside had shattered when he’d been tackled by the hunters. He’d need those special magical globes to trap Hellspawn.
After ensuring they were alone, Salvatore closed the front door behind them. Beck had expected the place to have been turned inside out, but that wasn’t the case. The only damage appeared to be a glass that had been knocked off the counter. He ignored the mess on the floor and dropped onto the couch in the same place that Riley had occupied when she’d delivered her devastating news.
Where are ya girl? If she ran to her apartment, they’d find her there. If she was smart, she’d go to Angus Stewart, one of the two master trappers in the city. Stewart would watch over her.
The captain sat in a chair opposite him. He moved as if he hadn’t had a decent night’s sleep in days. “We must find Riley Blackthorne as quickly as possible.”
“Why?”
“There’s a Fallen angel in Atlanta. His name is Ori. We believe he has targeted Paul Blackthorne’s daughter.”
Beck made sure he appeared shocked. It wasn’t hard. He still couldn’t believe that Riley had been with one of Lucifer’s allies.
“Why would one of those want her?”
“He is known for his seductions.”
Beck’s jaw tensed, but he didn’t reply.
“There is a strange pattern of events in this city, and that usually means there’s an epicenter, a focus to that activity.”
“If yer sayin’ that Riley’s the reason for all this—”
“What other conclusion can we draw?” Salvatore retorted. “Every demonic event in this city has centered on her: A Grade Five demon tried to kill her. The same fiend pressed its attack during the trappers’ meeting at the Tabernacle, and that ambush alone cost you a third of your Demon Trappers Guild.”
“I know the numbers, hunter,” Beck replied sullenly.
“If she is the nexus of this activity, we have to locate her and find a way to break that connection with Hell before more people die.”
Beck didn’t want to think about what “break that connection” meant. “Why a commando raid on my house? Ya could have knocked on the door like anyone else.”
“You weren’t home,” the captain observed. “Do you usually leave your house unlocked?”
Beck hesitated. “No. Why?”
“Both the front and back doors weren’t bolted, and your alarm wasn’t engaged. The back door was partially ajar, indicating a hasty departure, perhaps?” The captain leaned forward, elbows on knees. “Did you call Riley and warn her that we were coming?”
By now they’d have gone through his phone and know he’d called Riley after they’d quarreled, so he opted for the truth. “I didn’t know ya were comin’ here.”
“Yet you spoke to her.”
“Yeah. We argued about this Ori guy. He’d told her he was a freelance demon hunter, and I told her to stay away from. She wasn’t listenin’, so we had words. I called her to…” Why had he called her? Certainly not apologize, that was for sure.
“Where is she now?”
Beck shook his head. “I don’t know. Now I’m done talkin’ to ya unless the Guild’s lawyer is watchin’ my back.”
The captain sighed. “Look, I respect your loyalty to the girl’s father. Paul Blackthorne trained you, brought you up through the Guild. You were there when he died at the hands of the same demon that tried to kill his daughter. I know what you’re feeling, but we need your help.”
“Bite me.”
Salvatore scowled. “So be it.” He triggered a radio on his shoulder, and Italian filled the air. He’d barely finished giving the order when two hunters were through the front door.
The captain rose from, his face set. “Denver Beck, as representative of the Holy See, I arrest you for obstructing justice, additional charges to be filed at a later time. You are duly warned that if you are found to be aiding Hell in any manner, the ultimate penalty is death.”
“Go figure,” Beck muttered.

Book Review: Blood Feud

Blood Feud by Steven A. Roman

Sixteen-year-old Goth girl Pandora Zwieback has a major problem: she’s just discovered that her New York City hometown is the stalking ground for every monster and ghoul out to raise a little hell (literally!) . . . BUT she’s apparently the only one who can see them. That means she can’t tell her friends or family about the dangers around them—not unless she wants to spend the rest of her life locked up in a psychiatric ward.

But before Pan has a chance to make sense of her increasingly weird life, she finds herself in the middle of a war among rival vampire clans. Elegant Gothic Lolitas from Japan on one side, silk-suited London vamps on the other, leather-clad hunters from Eastern Europe in the middle, and all after the same prize: a mysterious crate recently delivered to the horror-themed museum owned by Pan’s father.

What is the terrifying secret of Item #179? How do its contents tie into an incident from the blood-drenched past of Pan’s new friend, a 400-year-old, shape-shifting monster hunter named Annie? And, more important, will Pan survive long enough to get any answers?

First off, let’s talk about the cover. I know some people had some negative say on it, but hey the book is set to look like comics, and I for one loved the art. From Pandora’s hair to her nails, everything was well-thought of. It makes her unique from all other heroines out there. So if you’re not so into the cover, just don’t mind it but let yourself be transported into Pandora’s story.

I admit the book was a little bit slow at the beginning, but later I realized the author was just giving us a backstory so that we would not get confused, by the fast-paced story awaiting us in the next chapters. From there, there’s action almost everywhere.

I loved the pop-cultured dialogues, descriptions of New York City and the different monsters that lurks hidden behind the shadows and I especially loved Pan and her 400-year-old, shape-shifting monster hunter friend named Annie. Whoa!, yup she’s 400-year-old but still beautiful and hot and there’s more stuffs awaiting to be revealed in the book.

I really liked Pan, forget about her gothic look but this chic is someone that is easy to relate to and loved. She is the best personification of a good friend. I would never mind being friends with someone who has “monster-vision” if they are as good, loyal and helpful as Pan..:) Also her relationship with her parents and friends makes reading this book outstanding from others.

There are also those supporting characters who made a life of their own that I was instantly rooting for. And hey, there’s little on the romance department, but it’s not a letdown, since the book doesn’t need it anyway..:).. maybe more to see on romance with the next book. And there’s actually little violence, so safe for younger teens.

This is one of those books that didn’t really end up in a cliffhanger, in fact it gives nothing away; the ending was simply amazing. And for the first time, I realize that if the book is good enough, it doesn’t need to have a cliffhanger or a teaser at the end to make you buy the next one. Instead, it would make use of the story as what it is and let the reader decide whether he should forget about reading the book or beg for the next one. And “Blood Feud” is one of these books.

“Blood Feud” is packed with comedy, horror, romance, paranormal urban fantasy, gothic themes and lots of hunting adventure that would surely bury its story on your mind. One of the best books I’ve read in paranormal urban fantasy.

Entertaining, Engaging, full of action and twist, Blood Feud gives me an emotional roller coaster ride, that left me breathless and wanting for more. I could easily picture Blood Feud being turned into a TV series or even a movie..:D

Can’t wait for “Blood Reign”- the 2nd book in The Saga of Pandora Zwieback. Highly Recommended for mature teens and young adult readers!

Unaware she's been bound from using magic, Frey leads a small, miserable life in the village where she's sent after the death of her mother. But a tiny spark starts a fury of changes and she finds hersef running from everything she's ever known.

Hunted by council for practicing dark magic, she is certain she's been wrongfully accused. She flees, and is forced to rely on strangers for protection. But the farther she strays from home, the more her magic and forgotten memories return and she begins to suspect all is not as it seems

First, I’d like to say that I was in love with the cover, it isn’t really great, but the simple design, the lettering, the color, it just makes it so delicious to a hungry reader’s eyes..:D

At first, the book started slow for me, but as the story progresses and the information are getting clear, I found myself in an unending ladder of excitement and twists.

The author weaved this story wonderfully. The descriptions are vivid. Ms. Wright’s writing style is something I never experienced before, she makes the story a bit complicated and after a few pages, you would say, “so, that’s it!!!, that’s the reason!”. It’s a great book, when a reader is always thinking what would happen next and this is what happened to me with “Frey”.

The characters are developed well and really likable. I could definitely feel with them. I enjoyed reading each of their backstories which lead me to understand and loved them more. They are the kind of characters which would leave marks in your heart even long after you read the book.

I loved Freya/Elfreda a lot. Although I think this is a weakness of the book since the heroine (I think) is not strong enough to be considered a heroine. She always faints and rely on others to solve the problems. Meanwhile I feel her pain, her sufferings and I root for her, would be by her side til the end of her journey..:D >I wish to see her become the strong and great heroine that she really is in the next books..

The story is fast-paced; wherein the story never lies low, there’s always something to uncover and be excite about.

I was frustrated, saddened, thrilled, angered and hopeful. This is a roller-coaster ride I wouldn’t dare miss out. I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series..:)

Packed with fantasy; elves, fairies and magical powers, Frey is a book I’d highly recommend!

Torn between her father’s Catholicism and her mother’s Pagan beliefs, Eva finally chooses Paganism. She accepts the name of Arethusa but learns too late that her life will mirror the Greek nymph’s tragic fate.

When they sail to the Azores Islands, her mother tells her that her destiny rests with Diogo, the shipowner’s son. But Eva sees a vision of another . .

When the ship founders off the Azores, Tristan, a young Azorean, saves her. Destined to be with Diogo yet aching for Tristan’s forbidden love, Eva must somehow choose between them, or fate will soon choose for her.

Artemis Rising is a beautiful, seamless blend of two mythologies: the Arthurian legend of Tristan and Isolde, and the ancient Greek legend of Alpheus and Arethusa. It is a story filled with young romance, tragedy, forgiveness and attempts at redemption.

*i won this book from member giveaways program*

I always love mythology, and it could only get better with a dose of Christianity…

The story is moving and I cried along with Arethusa, I can completely feel myself being in her shoes, and all those horrible things happening to her..

I find myself surprised at each turn of the story, things which I didn’t know would fall into…I especially appreciate the ending, I was thinking the same lines all along, but I was still surprised how perfect it ended. A complex yet highly engrossing read…

It’s really thrilling and horrifying what accepting other’s names would mean accepting their fate too… I really love this combinations of stories…

The book is a combination of fast and slow, it got slower at the part when they are growing into maturity, it’s just it jump to a couple of years, and I really want to know what happen in those missing years. The beginning is engaging and pack of twist… the middle not so much.. but the end says it all, I even felt my breathing stops at every words I read..lol…

I love how the author presents the philosophical thought between fate and choice, and how at the end, fate depends on our choice..(:D)…, the nature of true love and plain lust, and the danger of believing something and letting your mind be engulfed in things which are not true…

Ms. Lasota beautifully combined Greek myth, Arthurian legend, Christianity into a wonderful tale, any romanticist would love.

A book- Any reader could be carried away…Highly recommended!

Diviner by Bryan Davis

  • Author: Bryan Davis
  • Reading level: Ages 13 and up
  • Paperback: 432 pages
  • Publisher: Zondervan (August 30, 2011)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0310718384
  • ISBN-13: 978-0310718383
  • Series:  Dragons Of Starlight #3
The Mysteries Unfold
As a starlighter, Koren knows her destiny is to save her fellow human slaves from the dragon’s bondage- but by following the orders of the smooth-talking dragon king, Taushin, has she in fact doomed her people and herself?

As Koren struggles over her choices, Elyssa discovers a new aspect to her Diviner gifts when her pendant begins to unlock mysteries surrounding the stardrops from the Exodus star.

Soon Elyssa, along with Jason and his father, also discover new truths behind the dragon’s prophecy and learn that Randall has teamed with a major war imminent and talk of a new starlighter in the air, confusion and uncertainty reign- something Taushin might have planned for all along.

I read this book without reading the first two books, good thing this is a stand-alone and besides Mr. Davis hints the backgrounds of the characters, so it’s not that hard for me to get a good grip to the story.

Praise for the cover, it’s wonderful and beautifully designed!

I really enjoy reading and learning about how Koren, Elyssa, Jason and the dragons worked together to work against the dragon, King Taushin, and other dragons. In this book, the climax started to an ultimate battle between Taushin, leading the dragons, and the humans from Darksphere who are attempting to lead the unwilling slaves. Diviner takes the reader deeper into the mysteries of Starlight, its past and the unusual, turbulent relationship between dragons and humans.

There are a lot of revelations. And the characters are more determined to free the people. I’m just a little bit confused about the white dragon, if he’s the creator, he should be able to alter things. Maybe Mr. Davis intend to reveal this thing in the next book. Or maybe we could relate it into our world, there is God, but He still let us choose, He gave us free will in order for us to choose right from wrong.

It’s a book full of action, with dragons flying, throwing flames, sword-fighting, etc,. I couldn’t seem to put this book down, I am so into every adventure in this book, the storyline is getting complicated what with all those characters, but a reader could still keep up, it seems every character thrust into the story takes on a life of its on, not letting (me) forget them that easily.

The author brings to existence a new world where dragons exist, I enjoy reading and I feel comfortable in this new world he created.

The best thing I want in this book are the subtle messages about wisdom, faith and hope. It’s just that as I read the lines, and then something struck within me. It’s never a nuisance at all, it made me realize things…:) thanks to the author…

Mr. Davis weaves a wonderful story of love, sacrifice, truth and faith. I can't wait to see how it ends in the Fourth book Liberator. The story unfolds even more and answers start to come to the surface, and it still leaves you with answers to come. So many of my questions were answered - and many new ones were raised. I cannot wait for the final book.

When Diviner ended we were left wondering who will survive. Will Starlight ever be free or will history be repeated? Will Starlight learn the truth or will Taushin blinds them as their new Black King?

A must read! Highly recommended!
