EXCERPT #2

“You look beautiful,” a familiar voice said.

I turned around. Christian was standing directly in front of me, only a few inches of air between us. The nearness made my heart race. I lowered my eyes. “Thank you. You look good too.”

“I want to dance with you,” he said, breathing deeply.

I looked up, glancing around nervously. “You can’t. You know that.”

He closed the small space between us until I was forced to step back. “I don’t care.” He moved toward me again.

My cheeks flushed, and I made the mistake of looking into his eyes; they burned with passion, and the lights above reflected in them, making them even more intense. He reminded me of a hungry wolf. I stepped back again. “We can’t.”

He moved forward. After me. I continued backing up to keep our bodies from touching, but he wouldn’t stop.

I glanced behind me. Christian was guiding me into the long, white curtains hanging from the ceiling. “We can’t do this, Christian. You have to stop.”

I felt the soft material part as I stepped backward into it; the silkiness of it against my back was like a hand caressing my skin. I sucked in air and continued to move into the white layers until they hid us completely.

Christian said nothing. His gaze left my eyes and traveled to my mouth, considering it like it was something he wanted to conquer. My lips parted in anticipation of what was to come. His fingers found mine, and he tugged my hand forward, pulling my body next to his. His other arm tightened against my back until I was pressed against him.

Christian’s lips fell onto my neck. Very gently, he kissed my skin. His mouth continued to trail up my neck until he found my lips. The kiss started out soft, but all of a sudden my arms were around his neck, trying to get him even closer.

“Um, you guys might want to stop.”

I immediately stepped back, my breathing coming in great gasps.

May was a few feet away, parting the curtains. “Sophie’s looking for you, Christian. And she’s mad.”

I looked back at Christian. He was staring at me, breathing just as hard and cheeks flushed. He smiled. “I better go.”

I nodded.

Christian remained where he was, still looking at me like he wasn’t finished. I didn’t dare move either. I didn’t want to.

“Oh, come on!” May said. She pushed Christian away. “And straighten your tie!”

Christian looked over his shoulder at me and winked before he disappeared.

Blog Tour (Author Interview): Fractured Light by Rachel McCllelan

1.    When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always loved to write, but I didn’t take it seriously until a trip to Ireland in 2007. Something there made me believe in myself and gave me the confidence I needed to take writing to the next level. I began writing my first book in Ireland, a book titled THE DEVIL’S FOOL. The idea came to me when I was visiting an extremely old graveyard. That scene I wrote is still one of my favorites.  

2.    Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?

Not so much a routine, but I must have music. Music brings my characters to life much like lightening brought Frankenstein to life. Without music, my characters would be a rotting corpse.

3.    Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?

Everywhere. It’s possible to write about any object, any person, any thing. In my family we play a game similar to this. We’ll hand out objects or look at a picture and have to tell a story about it. And the stories are never the same. I love that about imaginations.

4.    What books have most influenced your life?

There are several, but I'll choose three: C.S. Lewis whose works helped me become a better person, James Dashner and Suzanne Collins for teaching me about pacing and tension, and (I know I said three, but I've got to choose one more) Markus Zusak for showing me how words can come alive.

5. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I love to snowboard, play racquetball and volleyball, watch football, hike, run, cook, make truffles, throw parties, go to movies, and eat. And then eat some more.

So You Want to Write a Novel

I believe there comes a time when we all want to write a book, whether a haring tail of adventure and fantasy or simply our life story, an itch begins and we must scratch it if it is ever to spread. It takes a lot of time and dedication to write a novel so you must find your "mojo" and let your characters, even if its yourself, out into the world where you'll spank it hard and let it inhale its first breath of life. It'll scream and cry at first and beg to be put back where its safe and warm, but you mustn't give in.

Take care of them, feed them, and soon you'll discover your characters like being in this world, or more importantly, that you like the characters and want them to stick around. Once you fall in love, there's no turning back. You want to see your babies grow up. Sure they might annoy you until bludgeon them to death, but then you just create new babies.

First you must find what helps you write. For me, it's music. I'm convinced in every note there is a story waiting to be told. There isn't a song out there that I can't write a story to. Try it. The next song you listen to envision action. What's happening? Is someone fighting? kissing? dying? If music doesn't work for you, try writing in silence, try different chairs, different locations. There's a Bermuda Triangle out there for all of us and as soon as you find it, new worlds explode into creation.

Now grab a pen and paper and become a God.
