Win and Read: The Watcher by Lisa Voisin

the watcher cover
The Watcher
Millennia ago, he fell from heaven for her. Can he face her without falling again?
Fascinated with ancient civilizations, seventeen-year-old Mia Crawford dreams of becoming an archaeologist. She also dreams of wings—soft and silent like snow—and somebody trying to steal them. When a horrible creature appears out of thin air and attacks her, she knows Michael Fontaine is involved, though he claims to know nothing about it. Secretive and aloof, Michael evokes feelings in Mia that she doesn’t understand. Images of another time and place haunt her. She recognizes them—but not from any textbook. In search of the truth, Mia discovers a past life of forbidden love, jealousy and revenge that tore an angel from Heaven and sent her to an early grave. Now that her soul has returned, does she have a chance at loving that angel again? Or will an age-old nemesis destroy them both? Ancient history is only the beginning.
From November 28th to December 1st The Watcher is on sale for just $1.99!

Excerpt
Instead of saying more, he brushed his fingertips along my cheek, and his halo glimmered. I could hear the waves slapping the rocks behind us, the wind driving them in. That same wind whipped against my skin, but the touch of his hand on my face was all I could think about. It sent a current through both of us and filled me with longing for something I wasn’t sure I understood. “I’m sorry.” He stepped back and shoved his hands into his pockets as the light around him faded. “You don’t know what it’s like. Being near you now, remembering those moments we had…” His hair blew into his eyes, but this time he didn’t move. I wanted to brush it back, but I didn’t know how he’d react. Would touching him be bad? “You want to know who you were?” he asked. “You may look different, but you’re the same. I look into your eyes and see you.” He took in a deep breath, fixing his attention on the horizon. I’d seen and heard so much now that the logical part of my brain had long since given up arguing with me. I could feel what he was saying was true. All of it. lisa v

Release Day Blitz: Asking for Trouble by Tessa Bailey

The Queen of Dirty Talking is back! Whether this is your first experience with Tessa Bailey’s dirty talking heroes or you’ve been following her all along, you don’t want to miss out on meeting Brent and Hayden. Their banter is witty, filled with sexual tension, and the sex itself is “fan-your-face” hot, according to an early review from USA Today Happily Ever After.
Here’s a dirty talking snippet just for you guys:
He leaned forward and spoke right against her ear. “Come for me right now and I’ll let you ride me as hard as you want later. I know what gets you off. I saw it in your eyes last night. You want to throw me down and fuck me, duchess? Good. I’m in the mood to let you.”
Now you see why she’s been dubbed the Queen of Dirty Talking!

About Asking for Trouble

Asking for Trouble (Line of Duty, #4)

Brent Mason and Hayden Winstead can't stand each other. She plans exclusive parties for her rich family’s charities. He’s a rough and tumble cop who rigs explosives for a living. Could two people be any less suited for conversation? They think not and prefer to keep it that way.

Unfortunately, their two best friends are deeply, disgustingly in love. Forced together, the mutual attraction simmering beneath the surface of Brent and Hayden’s non-relationship grows with every argument until it explodes into a scintillating night of mind-blowing sex. And it won’t be the last, as far as Brent’s concerned.

Hayden has a secret, though. Her father’s company is relying on a merger to save them from financial ruin, and only Hayden’s marriage to the CEO’s wealthy son can secure the deal. If she’s to protect her family, she’ll have to forget Brent. And he has no intention of being forgotten.

In celebration of her new release, Tessa Bailey’s first book Protecting What’s His is on sale for only ¢99 for two full weeks! (11/24 - 12/7) Just in time to gift it to everyone who appreciates a dirty talker.

About Protecting What’s His

Protecting What's His (Line of Duty, #1)

She’s running from the law, and the law wants her bad.
The opportunity was just too damn delicious for Ginger Peet to pass up. The purse full of money she finds—$50,000 to be exact—could give her and her teen sister the new start they need. So she grabs the cash, her gothy sibling, and their life-sized statue of Dolly Parton, and blows outta Nashville in a cloud of dust. Chicago, here we come...

Turns out, Chicago has some pretty hot cops. Hot, intense, naughty-lookin’ cops like Derek Tyler, who looks like he could eat a girl up and leave her begging for more. And more. Tempting as he is, getting involved with the sexy homicide lieutenant next door poses a teensy problem for a gal who’s on the lam. But one thing is certain—Derek’s onto her, and he wants more than just a taste.

And as far as he’s concerned, possession is nine-tenths of the law.

Loving Luce will stamp a demonic target on her back and thrust Wade into a frenzied whirlwind of hilarious misunderstandings and, quite possibly, a stripping gig for emptynesters. The Awakening: Britton by Abby Niles
The Awakening #3

"I would lick that man up one side and down the other."

Half-shifter and lead SPAC agent, Val Calhoun, has listened to women gush over the Don Juan of the precinct for the last four years. Yeah, Detective Britton Townsend is hot and has stunning blue eyes, but that foul mouth he saves only for her? What a waste of good looks. And no way does Val want that mouth anywhere near hers.

When the shifter community is threatened, Val is assigned to the case…and fails. So the High Council turns to the rogue shifter they'd sentenced to twenty years as a human--that same obnoxiously sexy Detective Townsend. And sends the two arch-enemies deep into the North Carolina Mountains-—together, and alone.

Being stuck in a tiny honeymoon cabin with Miss Castration and only one bed is definitely not Britton's idea of a good time. But the High Council doesn’t take no for an answer. After his shifter abilities are restored, Brit is once again susceptible to the dreaded, irreversible bonding instinct, the Drall. Thankfully, all he’s ever felt for Val is intense loathing, no reason to worry. Right? All he has to do is solve this case pronto, and he can go back to his footloose Casanova ways. That is, if they don’t kill each other first. Or worse...fall in love.

Missed the first book in the Awakening series? While these books stand alone, it can be fun to go back and see how the other couple got together. And in celebration of book #3's release, book one, The Awakening: Aidan is on sale for just $0.99 as well, so grab it while you can!

The Awakening: Aidan by Abby Niles
The Awakening #1

Is the gift of eternal love a blessing or a curse? After years of counseling grieving shifters, psychiatrist and half-shifter, Dr. Jaylin Avgar has become jaded on shifter mating. She wants to marry a human and forget about the love for eternity crap. Then she meets Aidan O’Connell, an infuriatingly laid back shifter who represents everything she doesn’t want. Yet, the more he pursues her, the more she craves a future with him. Only one thing stands in her way: death. Can she overcome her fear of losing Aidan to the one guarantee in life? Millionaire consultant, Aidan O’Connell knows he’ll one day meet a woman who’ll awaken an unrelenting mating instinct. Unfortunately, that woman is Jaylin, who has no qualms about telling him that he and his so-called eternity can shove it. When she pushes him away, he takes a drastic step so she can no longer escape. The close proximity throws the instinct into overdrive. Can he control the need engrained in him until he’s certain she will reciprocate the bond, or will a moment of weakness doom him to hell on earth?

BOOK REVIEW: Moonglow by Michael Griffo

Moonglow (The Darkborn Legacy, #1)Moonglow by Michael Griffo

  • Series: The Darkborn Legacy
  • Paperback: 416 pages
  • Publisher: K-Teen (February 26, 2013)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0758280726
  • ISBN-13: 978-0758280725

  • From the author of the acclaimed Archangel Academy vampire trilogy comes a stunning new series about a girl determined to defy her fate—and reclaim her future…

Something strange is going on with Dominy Robineau. All her friends in Weeping Water, Nebraska, have noticed—and it’s way beyond teenage blues. As weeks pass, Dom grows consumed by anger, aggression, and violence, and she seems powerless to stop it. Then she turns sixteen, and things get really dangerous.

When her best friend is murdered, Dominy’s father is compelled to reveal the truth behind the darkness that threatens to both overtake and empower her. Her boyfriend, Caleb, swears they’ll find a way to change her destiny. But others are hiding secrets too, and gifts that are far more terrifying than hers. And even as she struggles to control her new abilities, Dom must contend with an enemy who wants her to use the beast within to destroy all those she loves, before she destroys herself…

I must admit that I’m very excited with this book, just look at that cover and the premise, plus this book came from the same writer of The Archangel Academy which was my very first book review in Bookshelf Confessions. But rest assured that this is an honest review.

The cover is very gorgeous. I love everything about it except maybe the model’s expression. I love her red/orange hair, the big moon behind her, her dress and the title’s font. But more than that, it reflect what the story really is.

The prologue is very engaging and tension-filled, it would definitely grab any reader’s attention. However Chapter 1 goes back to “3 months ago”. Although Part 1 (the book composed of the Prologue, Part 1, Part 2 and Epilogue and comes with a sneak peek of Sunblind, the 2nd book) is a little bit slow, I understand that this is needed to help us know Dominy, the protagonist more, her friends, her family and the town/school she grow up with. But when Part 2 jumps in, I was already hooked, and I can’t put the book down. This part consists of Dominy questioning everything she thought she was, uncovering mysteries about herself and the curse, balancing between the guilt of her dead bestfriend –whom she thought and knew she killed, her jeolous boyfriend, and finding a way to change her fate- this book is action-packed and a lot of things are going on.

Michael Griffo has done it again—making an extraordinary story from the ordinary. Everyone of us know how common werewolf tales are ( I’m spilling it since you’d probably read it anyway from other reviews that Dominy is curse to be a werewolf once every full moon), but this book isn’t just another werewolf story, there is actually a plot of how it all started; there is world-building, this is an original take on a modern-day myth—and I love every inch of it.

There is however some points where the author is carried with words and descriptions. And some of the names are hard to remember or just very unique.

The characters are realistic although you might not love them. Dom is vain-she’s concern about pimples and her being ugly, which I guess depicts a normal teenager. She’s also aggressive, bitchy and has a bad temper-which was attributed to her “changing”. Jess is obssessed with Japan, and I’m not against it.. sure, the characters all have issues, but no one’s perfect.

I’ve read some reviews saying the book is racist, maybe it’s a matter of opinion but I didn’t find any racism in it. Just because the antagonist is referred to as evil and happens to be an American-Indian who does curses and magic, doesn’t mean it’s racist. Would it make a difference if it wasn’t an Indian woman? Off course it’s expected she should be seen as evil by the main heroine, who wouldn’t if she cursed you, right?

MOONGLOW is a page-turner with lots of twist and mysteries in every corner. And contains an ending that would left you astounded. It’s mainly a story of friendship, trust and family despite everything that has change. I’m so happy that I won’t have to wait for long since I already have Sunblind. Watch out for my review soon :)

If you love paranormal, especially werewolf tales and doesn’t overanalyze things, then this book is for you. The target audience mainly are teens.

I would recommend this book!

A virus that had once been contained has returned, and soon no place will be left untouched by its destruction. But when Cheyenne wakes up in Elysian Fields--a subdivision cut off from the world and its monster-creating virus--she is thrilled to have a chance at survival.

At first, Elysian Fields, with its beautiful houses and manicured lawns, is perfect. Teo Richardson, the older man who stole Cheyenne's heart, built it so they could be together. But when Teo tells Cheyenne there are tests that she and seven other couples must pass to be worthy of salvation, Cheyenne begins to question the perfection of his world.

The people they were before are gone. Cheyenne is now "Persephone," and each couple has been re-named to reflect the most tragic romances ever told. Everyone is fighting to pass the test, to remain in Elysian Fields. Teo dresses them up, tells them when to move and how to act, and in order to pass the test, they must play along.

If they play it right, then they'll be safe.

But if they play it wrong, they'll die

To be honest, I have low expectations for this book except for the beautiful cover, simply because I’ve already read some negative reviews about it. But I continued to read it- not because I owe the author or the publisher but because I was intrigued to rate the book for myself- and I was surprised!

At first my thoughts are confirmed- the heroine is naive enough to not question where she is- I mean one is expected to be hysterical after finding out you’ve been abducted, away from your family and into a new world you knew nothing about, but Cheyenne? She simply follows whatever Teo ( her love interest as of now) says, which is unrealistic and probably what tick off those reviewers to write negative reviews.

But alas, things changed when Cheyenne realized Teo is not what he seems to be. She began to question things and the absurdity of being in the Elysian Fields and why she feel that way for Teo in the very first place.—this happened at over 100 pages—and I’m glad I’ve read on. I now see Cheyenne as a different person- sure, she’s still naive in a way, but she’s fighting. She suffers from internal battle between what she feels when Teo kissed her and what she thinks she should feel agaist a murderer. It’s nice to see her together with Marc (Teo’s brother) find a way to the vaccine and escape this dark world Teo created.

The plot is actually very unique and interesting. It’s one of a kind. it’s also cool that there are 7 pairs that should relive the original famous tragic lovestories and that they were renamed to better fit the characters. I especilly loved the names, Bee and Ramus (Thisbe and Pyramus), Izzy and Tristan (Isolde and Tristan), Gwen and Lance (Guineverre and Lancelot), Cleo and Marc (Cleopatra and Marc Anthony), Juliet and Romeo, Persephone and Hades and the others.

I must say that the author succeeded in making a horrible character- that anyone would read will feel disgust- I’m talking about Teo ( BTW, older man from the synopsis means he’s 24 and Cheyenne’s 18, not the old man you’re probably thinking). He’s a perfect example of a psychopath and sociopath who likes to manipulate things and put it in his own order. He does not have sympathy except for Cheyenne—he’s just evil. And it’s seldom I feel strongly against a character like this.

Yes, the book has ups and downs, you might not relate to the protagonists, the subcharacters may lack personalities and backstories, but I should admit that I was drawn into this intricate sinister world. I was compelled to turn the pages and see what happens next. I was expecting some twist and turns but when it finally did—it wasn’t what I expected.

Mary Gray has written a sinister world full of darkness and deceit, that would definitely hit the scale of creepiness to maximum. THE DOLLHOUSE ASYLUM is an engaging, intriguing, thought-provoking world set in madness that left me in awe and shock. I would read the next one in the series and would read future books from this author. I highly recommend!

This Much Is True

Fate brings them together
Fame & lies keep them apart
One truth remains…

She’s become the Paly High girl with the most tragic story…
At 17, Tally Landon just wants to graduate and leave for New York to pursue ballet. Her best friend Marla convinces her to attend one last party—a college party—where she can be among strangers and evade the whisperings about the heartbreaking loss of her twin that follows her everywhere she goes. She meets Lincoln Presley, Stanford’s famous baseball wonder and has a little fun at his expense—when she lies about her age and who she really is—intent on being someone else for the night and escaping her tragic story.

His only focus is baseball, but he can’t forget the girl he saved on Valentine’s Day…
At 22, Lincoln Presley’s star is on the rise—about to finish at Stanford and expected to be taken early in Major League Baseball’s upcoming draft—his cousin’s party serves as a welcome distraction. But then, he sees the girl from Valentine’s Day that he saved from that horrific car accident and can’t quite hide his disappointment when she appears to look right through him and not remember him at all. He vows to learn her name at least before he leaves. What’s the harm in getting to know this girl? What’s the worst that can happen?

Fate soon tests these star-crossed lovers in all kinds of ways...
And yet, despite the lies being told to protect the other, and the trappings of fame that continually separate them, and in lieu of the deception by those they’ve come to trust the most; one truth remains.

This much is true.

Caution: This title contains some strong language, some violence, and some sexual situations and is intended for readers 18+ in age.

Author’s take on the leading man: :

Lincoln Presley is my version of a golden boy, who can and does accomplish just about anything life has to offer from athleticism to careers to relationships in getting what he wants; and yet, there is this unknown side to him, almost a vulnerability, that is separate from all the outward success and unseen by the circles he moves in. The character I created in Lincoln Presley operates in a world where he seemingly has just about everything, but hidden within that persona is this amazing discernible pain about his past and the people he’s loved and lost as well as this inexplicable connection to Tally. His mission in life up to now has been to be everything for his father and succeed at baseball. Baseball is all there is for him. Then he meets Tally Landon and with that single encounter, he’s changed in some mysterious way going forward throughout much of the story line.
What I like about Lincoln Presley’s character is that he eventually recognizes the flaws within himself and rises to the challenge in changing, both for himself and for Tally.
I tend to provide the vaguest of physical descriptions of my characters. On purpose. Readers can fill in for themselves what they look like. These are my inspirations for the characters as well as one reader’s inspiration for them after she finished reading This Much Is True. Use as you will, according to copyright guidelines.
Jamie Stokes Pinterest page of This Much Is True: http://www.pinterest.com/jamieestokes/this-much-is-true/

Author’s take on the lead female:
Tally Landon is an enigma. She is this amazing ballerina and takes her dance very seriously and yet there is the whole other side to her that the reader is introduced to in the very first chapter. Beautiful, talented, sexy. Tally is all of these things just like her identical twin, but there’s this other side of Tally that’s hinted at in the beginning. Tally is also dark, edgy, and takes unnecessary risks—the opposite of Holly. The reader is left wondering why when the unthinkable happens, and Lincoln Presley comes on scene to save her.
My intent with Tally Landon was to create a complicated character that largely ran with parallel dichotomies in her life both personally and professionally. Beneath the beautiful exterior and the exquisite talent she exhibits through her ballet is this lost girl whose vices include random sex with strangers and this edgy, self-centered side that uses for almost self-protection emotionally. Tally the rebel enjoys shocking her family and friends and exerts a certain control over her life in all these curious, exacting ways. She avoids relationships and commitments of any kind. Why? Readers ask. But after tragedy strikes, readers get this close-up of Tally as she struggles to find her way.  On some level, she is so far gone that only one person remains who can truly save her from herself; one person is capable of extinguishing her fervent propensity to lie in order to emotionally insulate herself from further loss. I. Can’t. Lose. Anyone. Else. She tells Linc at one point. I wanted to show the vulnerabilities that befall this young woman every time she faces hardship and uncertainty. Tally makes some mistakes and poor decisions just like all of us do at certain junctures in our lives when we’re faced with these unexpected, life-changing moments. I tried to make Tally Landon real. Lost (at times). Fallible (at times). Selfish. Self-serving. Lovable (eventually). I hope I succeeded. Many readers seem to think I have.
As I stated previously, I tend to provide the vaguest of descriptions of my characters believing that readers can fill in for themselves what these characters look like. However, these are my inspirations for the characters as well as one reader’s inspiration for them after she finished reading This Much Is True. Use as you will, according to copyright guidelines.

If you love angsty, unpredictable love stories, I’m yours. ♥ Connect with me at facebook.com/KatherineOwenAuthor.
