What’s one little spell?

When you’re new to magic, one spell can be the difference between getting what you want...and ruining the lives of everyone you love.

Sixteen-year-old Madison has just embraced her magical powers. The trick now is learning how to control them. She and her boyfriend -and fellow witch- can’t even enjoy a simple kiss without getting shocked when their powers collide. Instead of mastering her new skills, though, Madison is stuck watching her kid brother and doing chores.

But being a witch does have its benefits. With a simple spell, Madison instantly conjures the help she needs around the house. Or so she thinks. Her idea of “help” invites trouble of its own as a pair of dangerous yet enticing beings enter her life. When a classmate disappears soon afterwards, Madison discovers she's the next victim of a threat she's powerless to resist...and there’s nothing it won’t kill to make her surrender.

Caught in the crossfire between two dashing but deadly creatures, Madison must figure out which one to trust and how to rid her world of the other—before one of them destroys her and everyone she cares about.

INSPIRATION FOR THE EMBRACE SERIES
By Cherie Colyer

Embrace didn’t start out as a series, but I’m thrilled that it has grown into one. I had originally wrote book one to be a standalone novel about a girl who discovers powers in the world—powers she’d have to embrace in order to save her friends. But as I was writing Embrace I started to see what the immediate future would bring for Madison. She and Isaac would have to work past their magic colliding if they hoped to have a relationship, Madison would face new, more dangerous, supernatural threats, and I knew this time she’d risk losing someone very special to her—someone even dearer than her best friend Kaylee. Snippets of Madison’s future flittered through my thoughts as I created Isaac’s room—from the circular walls to the iron fixtures—it all had purpose, some of which is explained in book one. (I love being able to say book one, book two. )

Since Madison’s world was too complex to include everything in one book, Embrace focused on the Powers and the immediate threat to Madison and her friends. Everything else remained hidden in the background. Then the most wonderful thing happened. Readers asked if there’d be another book. They wanted more of Madison, Isaac, Kaylee and Josh. I was thrilled and got to work on Hold Tight, which had its title before the first word had been written.

It was fun to be back with Madison and her friends, and since I already knew what Madison would face, writing the first draft was fairly easy. Giving names to my new characters was fun, and once again snippets of Madison’s future flittered through my thoughts. While I haven’t started on a third book, I have a good idea what happens next, what time of year it will be, and what the next supernatural creature to enter Madison’s life will be.

I’d like to thank Bookshelf Confessions for being a part of the tour and having me on the blog. Don’t forget to check out the rest of the stops.

You're very welcome Ms. Cherie and it's a pleasure having you here :D

Win and Read: DiSemblance by Shanae Branham

DiSemblanceDiSemblance
Jason Tanner’s life has always been different from the ordinary citizen’s. It started when he was an infant and his parents were only teenagers. A computer science prodigy, Lloyd attended MIT but left a pariah in the eyes of the school’s dean—but a computer physics genius in the eyes of his primary investor. Then his theories and ideas created a holographic machine and their world shrunk as contact with the outside world became less and less frequent. A computer prodigy now himself, Jason is about to learn that the world never waits for you if you have the ability to change it: it will come for you. Detective Bruce Durante has been handed the case of the Comfort Killer, a serial killer so named because he appears to abduct terminally ill patients before returning their corpses to their families in refrigerated coffins. When he picks up the trail, it leads straight to the home of Lloyd Tanner. Jason has been living life through the world of Lloyd’s invention and wishing he could carry on a relationship with Boston, the beautiful girl next door. When his father is murdered and framed as the Comfort Killer, he is brought back to reality in a hurry. He is forced to destroy all of the planted evidence—and finds he is being targeted as the killer’s new fall guy. But the secrets of his father’s invention run deep and Jason, his brother Isaac,Boston, the Comfort Killer, and Detective Durante hurtle towards one another on a deadly collision course that leaves everyone’s life hanging in the balance.

Win and Read (Excerpt) : The Silver Strand by L.J. Clarkson

The Silver Strand
silver strand
Ever since twelve year old Isabelle Tresdon’s silver strand of hair sprouted, it’s been nothing but trouble: bleeding pink dust and sparking like a firecracker. Refusing to be known as the girl with the freaky, grandma hair, she wishes it never grew and the hair withers and tarnishes. The only problem is, the strand is Isabelle's source of magic, and she can transform particles of energy into matter. It's also her ticket into Mastermind Academy, a secret school inside the earth’s core. Five days remain before the strand drains her magic and life, forcing Isabelle to enter into a deal with two trickster Masterminds to save it. But what she doesn't count on is there is more at stake than just her life. The Silver Strand, a MG Fantasy Adventure for 9-12 year olds, is book 1 in the Mastermind Academy Series.

Author L.J. Clarkson
louisa
One thing you need to know about LJ Clarkson is that she tells BIG lies. She tells everyone that she gave up her career as an Environmental Engineer and Project Manager to write full time. But that's not entirely true. Ten percent of the time she sleeps in. Fifteen percent of her day, she spends surfing the internet, researching for new books and her business. Ok, fine. Two percent is for research. But she's only admitting it so she doesn't end up like Boldrick. For eighteen point seven five percent of her day, she runs her promotional and support site for authors, called Indicated (www.indicated.com.au). The rest of her time involves writing, reading, watching movies and TV, walking her dogs and falling asleep whenever her boyfriend talks technical computer lingo. Truthfully, she hates early mornings, mondays, grammar (yuck! just ask her poor editor!), broccoli and cleaning. If you would like to drop her and line and let her know what you think of the book, she would love to hear from you. Just not before 8:30am in the morning.

  Excerpt

“Did you know Isabelle has a silver, alien antenna?” Bimouth’s voice sang out over the shouts and chatter of the school bus, capturing everyone’s attention. “In science class, a magnet flew out of Mr. Higgins’ hand and stuck to her antenna. How freaky is that?” Isabelle’s back pressed against her seat. Bianca leapt up like a jack-in-a-box. Her voice came out as a hiss. “Shut your face horse mite or I’ll shut it for you.” Looked like the bus ride might end in death. Bigmouth turned to face Bianca. “What if Isabelle’s antenna, like, turns us into alien zombies?” A chorus of whispers broke out. Catching the bus was a very bad idea. Isabelle prayed again for that black hole to open up and suck her in. Better yet, she wished it would gobble up the bigmouth. Isabelle tugged on Bianca’s arm and said in a low voice, “Just cut it off.” Her friend’s eyes softened. “You sure, Boof?” “The hair’s caused nothing but trouble since it sprouted.” The little voice inside Isabelle’s mind begged her not to, but she didn’t listen. “Ok.” Something in Bianca’s school bag rattled as she riffled through it. She yanked a pair of scissors free. Isabelle’s gut clenched as her friend laid the strand between the blades. “Wait!” She suddenly felt unsure about whether to get rid of it. What if it were special and magical like Bianca had said? A magnetic hair, although cool, was hardly magical. Isabelle decided to test it. Closing her eyes, she willed her strand to turn Bigmouth into a toad. But Bigmouth’s voice still carried throughout the bus. “And in gym class, like, she bled this weird, pink dust.” “Definitely an alien,” someone nearby agreed. So much for Isabelle’s strand being magical. “Cut it,” she said, exchanging a sideways look with Bianca. Her friend squeezed the handles together. Fuchsia-colored sparks shot out and scalded Isabelle’s right cheek. The strand sizzled and hissed like a firecracker, drawing the attention of Bigmouth. She shrieked like a real girl. “Look! Isabelle’s antenna’s on fire.”

Guest Post (On Creating Chemistry) + Giveaway: Epiphany by Christina Jean Michaels

Title: Epiphany
Author: Christina Jean Michaels
Release: July 19, 2012
Age Group: New Adult/Adult
Genre: Contemporary/Romantic Suspense
Links to the book:

Book Description:

I had my first psychic dream when I was nine. Psychic implied power, and powerful wasn’t a word I’d use to describe myself. I couldn’t foretell the future or conjure visions at will, but I couldn’t think of a more fitting word to describe what I sometimes saw in my dreams.”

For 23-year-old Mackenzie Hill, tossing her life down the garbage disposal is easy after a painful incident shatters her life. Her heart is bleeding, and moving to Watcher’s Point is a chance to start anew, only she isn’t prepared for the guy who walks out of her dreams and into the flesh. Literally . . . because she’s been dreaming about this sexy stranger for years.

Mackenzie is even less prepared to face the dark nature of her dreams. They’ve turned disturbingly gruesome, full of blood and murder, and when they begin to coincide with the media’s headlines, she and Aidan realize her visions might be the key to stopping a madman from killing again.

Only Aidan has painful secrets of his own, and perhaps the biggest danger of all is falling for him.

Guest Post On Creating Chemistry

Personally, there's nothing that turns me off more than reading about two characters getting hot and heavy before I've had the chance to feel something for either one of them. There's hot sex, and then there's holy-shit-I-need-a-cold-shower-or-a-good-lay sex. And actually, on that second point, it doesn't even have to be sex. It can be a heart-pounding kiss, or just the characters yearning to be as close as possible to each other.

The key to creating good chemistry is writing your characters so your readers are invested. When an author makes the reader feel something, then they've done chemistry right. I've read all kinds of romances (erotica, dark erotica, clean romance, and steamy). If the chemistry is there, each story is going to stand out in my mind, no matter what.

I'd like to mention a few novels I've read in the past year or so that I think demonstrate sexual chemistry exceptionally well. In fact, my husband should thank the author of one of them, but I'll never say which!

Life on the Edge by Jennifer Comeaux—a clean romance, no sex, but amazing and sizzling chemistry. Sergei and Emily were real to me, and I felt everything they felt and experienced.

Unbreak Me, by Lexi Ryan—holy hotness! Talk about a story with substance that can get your blood pumping. I loved the sexual tension between Asher and Maggie, and I loved the layers and complexities of the plot.

Rock My Bed by Michelle A. Valentine—tantalizingly erotic! Classic case of bad boy showing his soft and sensitive side in the bedroom. *Swoon*

So, to wrap this up, I think good chemistry is written by creating characters that come alive—they need to have lives, feelings, thoughts, wants, and needs—and they need to be in the story for more than just getting it on between the sheets. Make your readers care about them and they'll feel those steamy scenes, no matter how explicit!

EXCERPT #3
You didn’t have to go through all that trouble, you know. Store-bought cookies would’ve done the trick.”
A rumbling laugh rolled out him, his eyes glittering with mischief in the mix of low sun and candle light.
You’re special, I guess,” he said on a sigh.
Her face went hot. She busied herself stuffing her mouth full of food so she wouldn’t have to say anything. After she finally thought she could control the ping-pong of sizzle, she spoke again. “Why the graveyard, Quinn? I think your tactic of asking me out alone was clever, but this…this has to be the strangest place I’ve ever had dinner with a man.”
His gaze caught hers. “Romantic?”
Surprisingly, yes.”
Unforgettable?”
Positively.”
He leaned back in his seat, studying her. “Then I’ve done well.”
She looked down at her empty plate, unable to stare at the strong features of his face. The twitch of his dimple when he smiled. The soft observation of his eyes. This really wasn’t turning out to be a total bust. And her resolve to not like him was quickly slipping through her fingers.
A hand appeared before her face. “Walk with me?” His voice caressed her senses. No other’s man voice had ever done that.
She looked up, feeling out of place with her inner electricity acting like he was the cure for the fire beneath her skin. That thought terrified her, but she wouldn’t tell him no. He’d gone to all this trouble. There was this churning feeling in her stomach, making her wonder if Quinn’s trouble was going to end up being her trouble, too.

EXCERPT #4
He pulled out her chair and she sat, watching his every move as he made his way to his own seat. “I hope this is okay. This is the most private table they have.”
It’s perfect.” She tried to breathe normally and ignore the strange feeling in her stomach.
Trace grinned, revealing the boyish dimples that framed his perfect mouth. “They have the best steak here. Seriously. You better order one for yourself because you’re not getting any of mine.”
At that, she laughed and her nerves eased up a bit. “Oh, I bet you’d give me a bite if I asked nicely.”
He eyed her from over the top of his menu. “Do you ask for things nicely? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you do that before.”
With her stomach clenching from the heat in his stare, Kylie put her menu aside. “Maybe you’ve never had anything I wanted badly enough to ask nicely for.”
He raised a brow and opened his mouth to respond. But at that same moment, a waitress appeared and asked for their drink order. Kylie didn’t miss how flustered the girl became when she got an eyeful of Trace. It would’ve been irritating, but really, with the way he looked tonight, Kylie couldn’t blame her. She was still trying to get a handle on her own self.
When the waitress left, Trace leaned across the table. “Actually, I take that back. I’ve heard you ask nicely a time or two. Matter of fact, it bordered on begging. I think it went something like, ‘Oh God, yes, please. Trace, please.’”
Heat crawled over her skin at his imitation of her. Barely keeping the grin of embarrassment from her face, she shook her head. “You’re not right. What kind of thing is that to say to a girl on a first date?”
He grinned back, the promise of something dark gleaming in his eyes. “Considering this date is going to end with that dress on my bedroom floor and your legs wrapped around my neck, I think it’s a perfectly acceptable thing to say.”
Good Lord. What was she going to do with this man? Oh yeah. Exactly what he’d just described.

Author: A.J. Sand
Release date: August 28th, 2013
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Group: Mature New Adult/Adult
Event organized by: AToMR Tours; http://atomrbookblogtours.com

Wes Elliott just met his match…and she might actually burn his entire world down.

Surfing and sex. This is Wes Elliott's life. And it's just the way he likes it.   `After seeing his parents stay in a loveless marriage his entire life, and burying away a heartbreak from his past, he knows where romance is best left: crappy chick movies. He'd rather lust and eventually leave, and that's exactly what the plan was when he met Lana Langston.

Except…turns out she’s only in it for the thrills, too. She's always only in it for the thrills: life in the literal fast lane on her motorcycle, and the hot nights in forbidden places without the awkward talks in the mornings after. She's Wes Elliott in way tighter jeans.
So, this should be perfect, right?
But the more time Wes spends with her, the more he wants the nights to turn into mornings. And maybe even longer. Suddenly, it isn't so perfect for him anymore.
And the things he thought were buried are digging themselves up.  Now Wes is in a lot of trouble.
He’s falling in love with the one girl who might be a bigger risk than even a guy who gets barreled by the most dangerous waves in the world is willing to take on.
Can Wes and Lana figure out a way to make it work? Or is he headed for something far more reckless?

Due to the sexual content, language and violence, this work is not recommended for readers under 18.

About the Author
A.J. Sand grew up an only child whose parents bought her many, many books to keep her busy, so it was only natural that she would start writing her own stories. She is the author of “Documentary,” “Remake” and “Recklessly.” She lives just outside of Washington, D.C.

EXCERPT 2
He pointed to the image of a topless Jessica Rabbit with a mermaid tail matching her signature red dress etched on his hand; the top half of her body, bare breasts and all, was displayed just below his fingers.
Lana was clutching his hand in both of hers now, staring down at the intricacies of the tattoo design—the coiffed red hair and exaggerated curvatures of her body—and tracing a soft outline with her thumbs. She drew her fingertips across the top of his hand with such slow, gentle strokes that the touch triggered the heightening of his arousal. Okay, he was wrong; maybe her touching him was a bad idea. Now, it felt too sensual for what he was thinking. Wes flicked his eyes over to her chest and down her legs again. Lana, too, had the kind of body that should’ve been immortalized in ink.
What is the fascination with her?” Lana asked with an eye roll. “No one would actually look like that in real life, you know.”
Wes shrugged and grinned. “It’s the idea of her I like. Any chick who is that hot—not-even-on-the-scale hot, like you—and who marries a guy who’s a soft three, is really endearing.”

When his instability hits a breaking point, Meresin’s only chance at survival is a perilous journey into a place from which few ever return. What he never expected was that confronting his demons would mean risking not only his future, but Dru's as well...and that one stubborn vampire might give him back not just hope…but his heart.

About Abby:

Ever since Abby Niles picked up her first Sweet Valley High book in sixth grade and fell in love with Elizabeth and Todd, she’s been hooked on romance. By the time she reached high school, she was devouring meatier romances with pirates, cowboys and knights. She never imagined that those years of reading would one day lead to her becoming a published author.

In her late twenties, after having twins and becoming a stay-at-home mom, she started doodling stories to keep her sanity. Next thing she knew, she was actually submitting to publishing houses. And was immediately rejected. That didn’t stop her though. She found herself some kickass critique partners, honed her craft, and continued submitting.

And eventually sold a short story, then a novella, then a novel, and now a series.

Today, she juggles work, home life, and writing. It’s not always easy, but hey, who said life was easy?

In her downtime, which isn’t often, you can find her playing ‘Just Dance’ with her kids or trying to catch up on her never-ending to-be-read list. She also loves Zumba, and refuses to admit she looks more like Animal doing his Muppet flail than a sensual Latin dancer.

About Kendra:

Kendra Leigh Castle was born and raised in the far and frozen reaches of Northern New York, where there was plenty of time to cultivate her love of reading thanks to the six-month-long winters. Sneaking off with selections from her mother’s vast collection of romance novels came naturally and fairly early, and a lifelong love of the Happily Ever After was born. After graduating from SUNY Oswego (where it also snowed a lot) with a teaching degree, Kendra ran off with a handsome young Navy fighter pilot and has somehow accumulated three children, three dogs, and one enormous cat during their many moves.

While stationed in a remote corner of the Nevada desert, Kendra penned her first romance, and a career often spent working in fuzzy slippers and pajamas was born. Her work has garnered both critical praise and award nominations, but the best part has been connecting with readers who share her love of dark romance (not to mention heroes with sharp, pointed teeth). Kendra currently lives in Maryland, and can usually be found curled up with her laptop and yet another cup of coffee working on her next book. She loves to hear from her readers, and can be contacted via email or her Facebook page.
