Blessed Are the Merciful

Blessed Are the Merciful by Joyce Shaughnessy

  • ISBN-13: 978-1456898182
Tragedy strikes…

Nine hours after the Pearl Harbor bombing, the Japanese attacks the Philippines, starting a war against the United States that was to last four years.

Despite the horrors of war, Elton and Susan fall in love.

The American soldiers fight desperately for six months on the Bataan Peninsula, with the Army nurses at their side, rendering aid when possible.

Finally, dying of starvation and disease, the Army discovers that the United States cannot send any supplies or men to fight the Japanese because they are committed to the European campaign first.

They realize there is no escape from the Japanese. The Army ultimately must surrender.

Elton is forced to walk the Death March and to witness horrifying atrocities during the rest of the war at Camp O’Donnell, Cabanatuan, and on the Hell Ships, where Americans are murdered by Japanese cruelty and neglect.

Susan is interred at Santo Tomas and secretly aids the Filipino Guerilla movement. Following his escape from a Hell Ship, Elton becomes involved with the Sixth Army Rangers when they free Cabanatuan Prison Camp behind Japanese lines.

But their love still survives…

I’ve never been proud of my country..lol…and the people, both Americans and Filipinos who fought for freedom and peace at that time.

Ms. Shaughnessy depicts what it looks like at that time, how war really is.. Through her words, I am transported to a world of bloodshed.. I cried at some of the episodes..I felt the fear everytime they heard gunshots.. I also felt how hopeless one can get.. I’m so into this book, since I always heard what happened at World War II from my history classes, but it’s never been as descriptive as this… Like disconnected parts of the bodies everywhere, and the doctor yelling for the nurses to find the missing parts in case they could connect it again…how gross ,,yet so true…

It was a wonderful merging of fiction and history, the letters, poetry and military documents added up flavor to the book. This book is thoroughly thought of.. The author spent a lot of her time, for research and the dates are so accurate. So the resulting masterpiece, really counts as a really wonderful one..

This is truly better than my history book.. I get to relate with the characters, see and feel things in their own eyes. I could almost believe that the book is an autobiography of the war veteran.. Full of action, romance, hope and belief in God.

It made me see how war didn’t bring any victory but loss and casualties at both sides.

Blessed are the Merciful is a powerful historical romantic novel. “Love amidst war”…

A heart-touching story of bravery, romance and hope…. A great read!...

*Ok, I get it, if you’re hesitating to read this long review, but this is actually short, and I can’t shorten it anymore, sorry!..:)… I just have so much to say…Off you go, it’s short, promise…:D

Kudos for the cover, it’s interesting and reflects the wonderful contents of the story.( A girl lying or falling)..:)

There’s no dull part in this book, as I turn every page, laughter, sorrow, heartbreak, entertainment swarm my senses.

The book quite remind of a Mexican Telenovela entitled Ruby, where the protagonist is the antagonist at the same time..lol… viewers tend to hate her, but are always watching it since they can’t get enough of her and even if they won’t admit, she’s the center of the show and she plays the story really well.

In Before I fall, Sam is just like her, a really unlikable character, one where we can always find as someone bullying the main protagonist. She is the mean girl, but as the story progress and as Sam’s character develops, I find myself loving this otherwise hated girl.

In the first pages, honestly, I can’t imagine how the author pulls this, a different girl with unlikable characteristics to be the center of the book.. But I later realize, that the author intends for the readers, to have fun in reading books which are new, something not going with the shy, good, wholesome girl they used to like, but with someone totally different.

Meanwhile, as to the favorite character , I believe it was Kent, he’s such a cute charming guy, that shouldn’t be treated as Sam does, it made me smile just reading their scenes.

As to the issues of alcohol, drugs, sex, a lot of swearing, bullying.. I guess it’s plain reality nowadays,..and a lot of teens could actually see themselves into this book… it’s not a campaign for these, it’s just that, the author presented something, which some might avoid… and this one makes this book more closer in my heart… this is a true depiction of teenagers around the world today… and it’s not a topic to be avoided, but one that needed counseling.

This book, is a story of one where you can’t just leave after reading, the lessons that must be learned reaches far beyond the conscious reader’s minds. It made me question some part of myself and my doings too..lol..

It made me realize how short really life is, we should be thankful for each day we live..and that we should use it to make a difference in someone’s life… and it’s a fulfilling thing to die happily helping others… the ending is heart-breaking and mind-opening…

Ms. Oliver did a YA masterpiece, which is powerful, thought-provoking and in-lined with teenage tastes… this is not just for teens but for everyone out there…

This journey in Sam’s life, is one thing I would forever remembered, hard as I try to imagine a different ending, reality would soon seep in… I shed tears along the journey, but I cry full-hard at the end, it’s just so full of emotion, I actually put myself in Sam’s shoes. Ms. Oliver is an author to watch out for… and her future books would definitely be in my to-read list..:)

Writing this review wouldn’t let you in fully to the roller-coaster ride of emotions readers experience while at this, so I suggest you should get your copy and find out for yourself!

Highly Recommended!

THE WOMEN OF BLOCK 12 is a journey into the world of incarcerated women, a world of broken childhoods and shattered dreams, a world of chaos and utter despair.

It is the story of the more than 200,000 non-violent female offenders who occupy beds in America's jails and prisons. But it is also a story of great courage in the face of adversity, the resilience of the human spirit, and the hope that springs eternal through faith in Jesus Christ.

Author,Linda Pischke reveals how God teaches us to love the unlovable when we open our hearts to serving him.

Before reading this book, I don’t really feel any compassion to those who are in jails. I keep thinking that they deserve it…but after this..it made me see a whole new side of these people, whether they are criminals or offenders, they’re still like us,--humans…

I never would have imagined listening to these women’s tales..but I find myself laughing and crying with every bump in their way. The book was well written, that it made you shiver just like they’re in front of you talking. Ms. Pischke made the words come alive. It’s not just about the dreadful things they’ve done once, but the little good things they always do.

This book made me realize, feel and sympathize with the horror, sadness, loss, unforgettable and tragic experiences of the women. And at the same time, it made me see their own tales of endurance, strength, faith and forgiveness.

It made me feel blessed of the little things I have and where I am now. It made me see how we can all be so judgmental when in fact, we don’t have the right to be..

Linda Pischke did a good job in presenting readers a story that would forever stay in their minds, and would persuade them to be of help and made a difference in every life they encounter.

Thank you Ms. Pischke! Thanks for answering God’s call, this book truly touched me….and everyone who’ll put a hand in this..:) and more than anything, no one could have write this better than you.

Women of Block 12, is a compelling story of women who suffered and continually hope for good. A mind-opening reality will seep in to anyone who had read this book.

An inspiring story! Highly recommended!

Fire captain Mitch Andrews can't forget the three young children he saved from a fire. A suspicious fire that left them orphans. In the care of foster mother Jill Kirkpatrick, he knows the little ones will be loved. Even if the sweet, strong widow won't let Mitch close to her.
But suddenly the kids—and Jill—are in terrible danger…and one of the children is missing. Mitch and Jill will risk everything to find the stolen girl and keep a makeshift family of five together forever.

This was actually the first book I read of Ms. Hansen’s, judging from this book, this won’t be the last.:)…

The romance is subtle, but it’s there, a clean romance, with lot of action, mysteries and suspense in it.

The book is truly inspired by God. In every lines, I felt God constantly knocking at their hearts. It’s a book of faith, and that anyone like Mitch should not let himself stray away from God. It’s not like we deserve the trials were facing, it’s a way of life to make it stronger.

A lot of insights are written in the book, how the characters fought for justice and peace, meanwhile searching themselves of their faiths.

I really liked the characters, especially the children and Tim, who was trying to be a big brother and protect everyone, it’s quite funny at the time when Mitch didn’t believe Tim and actually accuse him of someone just trying to vie for their attention. The kids are lovable. Jill and Mitch on the other hand, made me frustrated, I get it their good friends, but obviously they have a thing for each other, they’re just both afraid of doing something that would ruin it up…

Although I already guess who the villains are, there was a point when I somehow can’t believe the turn of events, especially the end part, so sudden… it left me asking, so that’s it?....

But when it comes to Jill, Mitch and the children’s fate.,,I totally agree with the author..:)

If you want to read something with lots of drama, farm, dogs, kids, a cute romance, then what are you waiting for.. this book might be the one for you!

Rapture

Rapture by Phillip W Simpson
  • Paperback: 300 pages
  • Publisher: Pear Jam Books Ltd; C Format Trade Paperback edition (October 1, 2011)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 047319161X
  • ISBN-13: 978-0473191610
  • Average Customer Review: 4.4 out of 5 stars
The Rapture has occurred, just as the Bible predicted. The faithful have risen up to Heaven. Those left behind are in a living hell.

Earth burns, hell-like in its oppressive heat. Every volcano in the world has erupted, and tsunamis and earthquakes continue to devastate the planet. Clouds continually rain ash onto the scorched landscape, sparking fires all around. Plants and animals are dying. Food is scarce. The night sky is devoid of stars, and the moon - when it can be seen - is the colour of blood.

The remnants of humanity fight for survival. Most have fled the cities and now hide in caves deep in the mountains. By night, demons stalk the Earth, capturing the remaining humans and killing them - if they're lucky. The less fortunate are converted to worship of the Devil, and ushered into endless hell.

Eighteen year old, Sam (short for Samael) was raised in the town of Jacob's Ladder, Utah. It is appropriately enough near to a place of natural scenic beauty called Devil's garden. He finds himself alone, unable to rise up with his family because he is half demon. His mother, a devout Christian, was seduced by Satan and conceived his child. She smuggled the boy to an old friend Hikari, a Japanese sword master and demon expert. Since then, Hikari and his daughter, Aimi, have been all the family Sam has known.

Now they're gone, and Sam must set out on the mission Hikari charged him with long ago: to help all the humans left behind. Armed only with his beloved Japanese swords and his wits, Sam wanders the post-apocalyptic world alone, separated forever from everyone he loves. Cursed by his demonic heritage, he must now embark on a quest that will take him across the US to the City of Angels.

There he will confront his destiny. There he must fight to save a friend ... and the souls of the living.

I have always read books about raptures..but never before I encountered one, where the story was set after the rapture.. and my verdict is it’s really great!

The cover is oh –so eye-catching… if ever I’ll pass in the bookstore, I’ll definitely grab this book.. what with the flames, the hooded boy with scorching eyes looking back at you, plus swords…lol… Probably the best cover concerning the theme I’ve ever laid my eyes into.

For me, this is another light regarding heroes.. a hero who is not perfect at all, someone who has the tendency of making big mistakes, giving in to temptations, but still has a strong will power.

Mr. Simpson made a wonderful job in giving us glimpses of both Sam’s past and present.. It’s good that we not only know what it is he’s facing now, but how he grow up and about the past before he was even born. It made us see who Sam really is…

It’s a good mix of Japanese principles and culture, and of course Christian beliefs… Fast-paced and engrossing, I find myself facing demons all around and learning to trust other people just like Sam did..

The battle for me, is more like an inner turmoil for Sam, it should have been really hard to be thrust in a fate, you didn’t do anything to deserve..and even if there are things it would seem easier to give in to his true nature, but remembering his master’s word, he continues to do anything for the greater good. Sam is a very likable character… I feel in love with him instantly, even with his horns and inhuman eyes.:D

Although this book, is based on the prophecies of New Testament, basically Revelations, it has nothing to do that would drive non-believers away.. It’s a book for all readers out there who enjoyed a bunch of actions and demons..:)

Mr. Simpson presented a lot of twist and turns in the story, that even if you think where you’re going, you’re suddenly surprised by the exciting happenings. He wrote the book, with so much details that it’s easy to picture Sam with his swords, fighting all those demons and saving the innocent people left on earth.

I also loved the verses in every beginning of the chapter, it’s enlightening and a mirror of what lies ahead… actually, it’s in the end part of the book that I begin to realize it’s a trilogy, with all the climax happening, it just couldn’t fit into a one-chapter end.. So, here I am, left wanting for more!.. I’m overly excited about the next book, and how Sam’s life would go…

Overall, Rapture, is a good-starting book, filled with actions and vivid descriptions of the post-apocalyptic world… Good job Mr. Simpson..:D

One day he brings a young woman with child to  her - and a secret that must be kept. A little girl is born, and  Rose becomes a mother. Captain Wyatt offers to marry her in name  only to protect her from Charleston society gossip, but she is    determined she will not marry a second time for protection. She   will marry for love or live alone.

Just three months later, August 31st, 1886 the city of Charleston suffers the worst earthquake of the century. Her beautiful home   is in shambles. Every person Rose loves is taken away. Her faith in God is        shaken. There is a plan for her, but she can't see it. Captain    Wyatt breaks her heart, not once but twice.

Ireland Rose, titled from the heroine of the story..It’s quite a weird name.;)

I always love historical romances..and this time the story is set in Ireland and Charlestone.

It’s quite fascinating really, how she found love in Captain Wyatt..especially the story behind Wyatt and his first love, I won’t say more..but it’s really a wonderful coincidence, and just like Rose I’m so into the lovers letters, even if it sounded as a one-sided-conversation…

Honestly, at first I found the story rather a little slower…I also hate the fact how Wyatt seemed to act nonchalant about Rose…but at the end..everything makes sense.

Rose’s character is truly amazing! Even her life was put into chaos, she still believes in God..even if the whole society would ridicule her, she still did her best to protect others first. With this book, I felt more connected to her than anyone else, from her sweet moments as a rich Captain’s daughter, to her being a widow, to the time she’s been look down by her former friends until she have to let go of the child she cared for..Through ups and downs, her character become strong. And I think, it’s one thing that should remind us to be like her.

This book proves that whatever happens, even if you have nothing left..He has still his plans stored for you…You just have to trust Him. More than anything else, Ireland Rose is pack with history, romance and a wonderful lesson about faith and love that any reader could bury in their heart…

Ms. Patricia Strefling did a wonderful job in weaving histories of Ireland and Charleston into a unique and provoking story…

If you’re interested with a little drama, historical romance….grab this book now!..:)

Knowledge changes everything…

Hoodoo-influenced Southern Louisiana seems like the perfect place for Camille to relocate and escape her abusive past. She didn’t expect to fall in love and plummet herself into the world of Amaranth, a place of exile for reformed vampires.

Thanks to her deadly vampire ex-boyfriend, she’s confronted with decisions that not only threaten her life but the lives of her inhuman friends that she has come to love. Entangled in her friends’ quest for freedom, she dives into their realm and faces the threats of the ruler of Amaranth—the mother of all vampires—and her own inner demons.

Will she derail her life and make the ultimate sacrifice for the very monsters that interrupted her bumpy path back to sanity—the one she wanted so desperately in the first place? Or will she find a way to escape with her vampire love before it’s too late?

First and foremost, congrats to the book’s designer, it’s beautiful and eye-catching…(clap..clap…:D)

The storyline is interesting… especially Gavin’s middle name, Deveraux.. I love French… the first setting of the book too is breathtaking… where else would someone plot a romance story…---Paris…:D and of course Louisiana become vibrant and alive with the author’s description.

Another thing that made me curious, as to why the boys always bring them back before midnight…why, oh why?... you’ll find it out if you read the book…I just couldn’t give everything away…lol…

The book talked about what women constantly face especially in relationship, how some continually experience violence from their supposedly protectors and lovers. It’s nice that Camille somehow finds it in her heart that everything was too much and that she should stand for herself and leaves that guy.

It’s a different take on vampire stuffs..another conflict.. It seems vampires have other abilities too,,..they don’t only suck blood, also dreams, desire and hope too.. wow! Amaranth seems to be a wonderful place…and I can’t help but think about how Gavin and Camille end up, would they live as humans or as vampires…

I wish too that Gabe and Audrey would be expanded in the story.. or maybe that Ms. Wade could write their own story..(just me and my overly-reactive imaginings…lol..)

The first meeting of the characters are unforgettable… it’s simply a wonderful coincidence…lol.. The characters are lovable and real.. you could relate to them easily…

At first I think the story is slow-paced, but when it got to the 2nd up to the last part, I find myself engulfed with too much actions, revelations, and unconditional love the characters have for each other.

The end part of the book blow me away.. it’s too much..actions here and there…I have never been engrossed in a story and then it left me off the hook… OMG! What else could this book do to me..:D

Talk of a real cliffhanger….. I hate the last part, especially when it keeps telling me that I couldn’t stay put until I read the next book --The Gates lol… I’ll definitely be looking and begging for this one…. Highly recommended!

THE RETURN OF THE HIGHLANDERS: BOOK 2
Four fearless warriors return to the Highlands to claim their lands and legacies. But all their trials on the battlefield can't prepare them for their greatest challenge yet: winning the hearts of four willful Scottish beauties.

IRRESISTIBLE DESIRE
Alex MacDonald is known for his skill as a warrior, his prowess with women, and his vow to never take a wife. But now his chieftain has asked him to make the ultimate sacrifice: wed Glynis MacNeil, a lass famed throughout the Highlands for her exquisite beauty-and defiant ways.
Familiar with heartbreak, Glynis refuses to fall for another handsome scoundrel. Yet when Alex's past sins force an unlikely union, Glynis gives in to temptation and becomes his wife. Will their newfound passion be strong enough to fight the enemy that threatens their home, their clan, and their very lives?

“The Sinner”
It’s actually the title that lead me to read the book, and sure enough I find myself reading this, just in one sitting. Sure, I’ve read a lot of historical romances, but this is my first time to be faced with a Highland romance.. and I say this definitely blow me up...

I know this book comes in 4, and that this is the 2nd. I may not be able to compare it to the first, but since this is a stand-alone, I find myself totally engrossed with the story. For me, the book’s plot and intriguing storyline keeps me reading it until the end.

I love the seer's prediction of three women that bring danger, deceit, and deep desire to Alex MacDonald which weave their way through this action-packed, emotionally-intense tale.

I really enjoyed reading Alex and Glynis' story. They both grow and learn to love and trust even with their past experiences that led them to believe there’s no real love.
From the minute I began reading The Sinner, I was absorbed in the story. I can’t believe, but I’m so into this.

Margaret Mallory wonderfully weaves a story, full of facts and historical figures that is both compelling and thrilling. There’s no dull pace in the story, it’s either full of revelations, fighting scenes, steaming romances, or Alex and Glynis’s constant battle of wills…:D

As a woman, or should I say a girl, definitely I’m on with Glynis’ side, I could feel the constant nagging thought of Alex’s infidelity, but I came to a point to hate her, when she mistook Alex action, she should have listened to her heart and Alex’s explanation, instead she followed her overflowing jealousy and doubt…( Sorry I get carried away)…. With this, I think Alex is more likable than Glynis..;)

Don’t get me wrong I love everything about the book, but what I love most, are the Gaelic sayings scattered within, it resembles the characters’ actions and enlightens readers too.

The book also comes with historical facts at the back pages, stating where some of the characters came from. And also the 3rd book’s excerpt..it really sound promising…

Full of action, passion, romance, sacrifice, pride, destiny, honor , this book is a must read for any historical-romance lover…

Ms. Mallory is an author to watch out for…I can’t believe I’ll be snooping again for her other books, but sure I will..:)..I can’t wait to read her future books.. Count me in, I’m one of The Highlanders fan now too!lol

The Sinner is a delicious book any romance, historical lover would crave for…Highly recommended!

Alone in a snowy, remote Whistler village, Ana tries to build a new life since losing her parents. With a cozy condo, a sweet-faced bulldog and an evening job to leave the days free for the slopes, life slips into a great routine. If only she could shake the guilt for not remembering anything about her parents and banish the night terrors that haunt her every dream.

On a whim, Ana goes out with Athen, a guy she’s just met in the Grizzly Pub... The only problem is that she feels like she already knows him. Within 48 hours of meeting Athen and his family, Ana’s world implodes. She falls for Athen quickly and before she knows it, a past life begins to resurface. As thrilling as the revelations appear at first, she fights against the chilling information that Athen is from the underworld.

Soon she begins to struggle as her own supernatural gifts are slowly unveiled, and she realizes that the nightmares she’s been having might be premonitions and not dreams at all. It is up to Ana to decipher between fact and fiction before it is too late, and her new love, Athen, follows in her same fate - one that is lost between two worlds .

Awakening serves as an introduction to a really good story.., In this book, we got to know more of the characters and their pasts, we also learn about the plot and what this is all about. The theme of the book, Nephilim, white and black demons, and the awakening ritual, added up spice that are new to reader’s ears.

White demons vs. Black demons is a unique plot..it made me see good and evil… Like the rest of the reviewers.. A big wow to Ms. Bolton, for her wonderful descriptions of the place, it made me want to go there too, and experience a good white Christmas…:D

It’s quite fascinating, how fast Ana and Athen’s relationship grow, how fast they become a couple, but somehow it got slower in the middle, I felt Ana’s patience thinning..:).. but it adds up to the reader’s anticipation and when they sealed they’re relationship at the end, it gives satisfaction…

Even though there’s just a little bit of romance, the characters are developed so well, that you would find yourself loving each. The actions or fighting scenes also are short-lived but I believe the next book has a lot to offer.

The ending had me in almost tears..lol….I can’t wait to read the next… I somewhat felt Ana’s loss .. I grieve for Athen too…

I can’t believe this is the first published book of Ms. Karice Bolton, based on this, another paranormal genius grace the literary world.:)

I think, the author should somehow alter the given synopsis of the book, maybe give it some spice or anything that would hint the readers how good this book is…. For me, the synopsis, is lacking, it is not something that would make you buy this book…where else the storyline is fantastic.

A kind advice from me, don’t buy this book----without intending to buy the second one!.... because whether you like it or not, once you came up reading til the end of book one, you would have the urge to buy the next…Awakening leaves off in a fast, action-pack thriller, that will made good impression for the second book Legions..

I can’t wait to read the next book- Legions! Highly Recommended for everyone, whether you like angels stuff or paranormal things…..

FREE EXCERPT: Demon Lover by Juliet Dark

Title: Demon Lover
Author: Juliet Dark
Publisher: RandomHouse
Published Date: December 27 2011

Since accepting a teaching position at remote Fairwick College in upstate New York, Callie McFay has experienced the same disturbingly erotic dream every night: A mist enters her bedroom, then takes the shape of a virile, seductive stranger who proceeds to ravish her in the most toe-curling, wholly satisfying ways possible. Perhaps these dreams are the result of writing her bestselling book, The Sex Lives of Demon Lovers. After all, Callie’s lifelong passion is the intersection of lurid fairy tales and Gothic literature—which is why she finds herself at Fairwick’s renowned folklore department, living in a once-stately Victorian house that, at first sight, seemed to call her name.

But Callie soon realizes that her dreams are alarmingly real. She has a demon lover—an incubus—and he will seduce her, pleasure her, and eventually suck the very life from her. Then Callie makes another startling discovery: He’s not the only mythical creature in Fairwick. As the tenured witches of the college and the resident fairies in the surrounding woods prepare to cast out the incubus, Callie must accomplish something infinitely more difficult—banishing this demon lover from her heart

Cover Unveiled: Chosen Ones by Tiffany Truitt

Title: Chosen Ones (The Lost Souls, #1)
Author: Tiffany Truitt
Publisher: Entangled Publishing
Release Date: April, 2012

What if you were mankind’s last chance at survival?
Sixteen-year-old Tess lives in a compound in what was once the Western United States, now decimated after a devastating fourth World War. But long before that, life as we knew it had been irrevocably changed, as women mysteriously lost the ability to bring forth life. Faced with the extinction of the human race, the government began the Council of Creators, meant to search out alternative methods of creating life. The resulting artificial human beings, or Chosen Ones, were extraordinarily beautiful, unbelievably strong, and unabashedly deadly.

Life is bleak, but uncomplicated for Tess as she follows the rigid rules of her dystopian society, until the day she begins work at Templeton, the training facility for newly created Chosen Ones. There, she meets James, a Chosen One whose odd love of music and reading rivals only her own. The attraction between the two is immediate in its intensity—and overwhelming in its danger.

But there is more to the goings-on at Templeton than Tess ever knew, and as the veil is lifted from her eyes, she uncovers a dark underground movement bent not on taking down the Chosen Ones, but the Council itself. Will Tess be able to stand up to those who would oppress her, even if it means giving up the only happiness in her life?
